new(?) end cap idea...

Hi.

While I agree that the end cap of the 1-piece range should be of a non-magnetic material to facilitate the insertion of a small compass into the internal recess, has anyone at CRK considered offering a special edition "hard use" cap that has a steel base plate? Such a base plate would only need to be 1/8" thick or so and could be inlayed into the base of the cap and affixed with a flush / counter-sunk screw. By keeping the steel relatively thin, it should not affect a compass inside the cap. This would be a great asset to guys like me who have grown accustomed to regularly using their knife as a field hammer. Such a cap would definitely cut down on the need to buy replacements :)

If the cap is screwed all the way down the base of the cap should sit on the shoulder of the knife handle and pounding shouldn't damage the threads.

Yep...that's seems to be the case. I just thought that a steel striking surface would be a worthwhile improvement... Anyone with me on this?

I could never figure out why it wasn't made of steel in the first place. Although it is nice to have a compass in there, I'd rather have a knife I can utilize as a hammer if need be, I can attach a compass to my watch easily vs sticking a hammer in my pocket.

You know, if you fill the handle 2/3rd's of the way with sand you could have a dead blow mallet ;):p

I do see where a steel butt cap would offer more "hammerability" but you would want it to be softer than the rest of the knife to prevent thread damage. Even with the cap fully tightened you'd still be placing pressure on the threads because the O ring will give a little.

cpirtle,
I see your point about the end-cap threads being softer than those on the handle...that way, if damage occurs, it will be to a replaceable part. For this reason, as well as the one I alluded to earlier about the desirability of the cap being non-magnetic, I would rather see a steel plate attached to the existing aluminum cap vs. an all-steel cap.

JEFFREY,
I also understand your point...but I really like the fact that I can have a high-end button compass (brass, jeweled, "SAS" button compass - see: www.tripleaughtdesign.com) in the end-cap...though I also most-always carry a good mirrored map-compass (Suunto MC-2).

As for the rest of my handle contents, I have in there a DoneRight Manuf. "Military Match" (http://gotfire.com/firestarters599.html), one (1) "Wet Fire Tinder" block, a small Thompson snare (http://www.raymondthompson.com/index.html), the rod-only portion of an EZELap Shirt Pocket Diamond Sharpener, and a $20. Sometimes I swap in some (about 20) iodine tabs in a small glass vial (http://www.specialtybottle.com/vial.html) or (http://www.sunburstbottle.com/cat13.html)
