I live in sort of a mountainous swamp in Massachusetts with plenty of Hemlocks, Cedars, and Oaks. The only place where I am both willing and able to do any bushcraft is in my own back yard about two hundred yards into the woods.
For about a month (four trips to the woods) I have been working on making a bigger shelter, which required me to dig a 6-7x4’ hole. However, today I was nearly done with said hole when I realized that I couldn’t go any bigger than about 5x3’ due to immovable rocks on both ends and one side. After probing around the area a little bit more I decided that I was right above one big rock under a foot or so of dirt. There is no other clearing for me to try digging in again, so I’ll have to accept my loss of time, cover the hole, and try again with an overground shelter. I want something durable that I can sit up and lie down in at least, with a roof, floor, and walls on each side, which can be made entirely with wood, dirt, brush, and (possibly) rocks.
Any ideas?
