Well, There Extrema Ratio just unleashed a new folder. It looks pretty neat. I already secured mine when they come into the country.

The legal part of my post has to do with the blade. There is a ~1" portion of the blade top sharpened (for penetration), a la RAO. In MD is it illegal to carry double sided knives as they are deadly weapons. My question is:

Do you think this constitutes a double edged weapon? I would say yes, or at least it is REAL border line.

Oh well, I will still get it. I could do without the belt cutter though... :p

Check it out (THIS ARE NOT MY PICTURES THEY BELONG TO EXTREMA RATIO. I apologize if this breaks rules. It is not intentional, and for informational purposes only)

Pretty sure that could be construed as double edged. I think it depends where in MD you live, too. If you are in Montgomery County, people freak out over a letter opener!

Yep, I am in Rockville. I keep a copy of the state law in my glove compartment and also my wallet. It is not a very knife friendly area for sure! I'll need to be careful with this one. :)

I'm pretty sure any intelligent person would realize any knife is a deadly weapon, being one sided or two sided makes little difference.

I wouldn't consider that double edged, but I imagine it would boil down to most officers saying that it is illegal for whatever reason, and you would be in trouble.

Definitely not my cup of tea, looks painful to carry and even moreso to hold. A little too busy/MN for my tastes. The law is one thing, the way the officer you end up with interprets that law in your case is quite another. Best of luck...

to find out, you're going to have to look through the case law of your state. If you don't find a similar case, you'll look through all 50 and see if there's something pretty close that would be persuasive authority.

Barring pre-existing case law, the judge will look at the statute and legislative history for your knife laws and try and figure out what your state legislature really meant by double edged.

I would bet that this would fall into the category. It's literally double edged.

Now, if a cop knows that law and sees it and wants it, he can confiscate it. If you commit or are accused of committing some violent crime with it and the prosecutor wants to get you with every possible way, he'll throw that in there too.

But like most of these carry laws, they're practically unenforceable if you're living like an ordinary person.

Why would you not consider this double edged? Its sharpened on both sides of the blade.

Only being 1" I would not consider that double edged, a peace officer may, it isn't unprecedented to hear stories of officers wrongly quoting law. It also boils down to individual officers opinions, the only way to truly determine if the knife was single or double edged would be if it went to court and a precedent was then created by that case.

At any rate, the picture of the tip is NOT of the same knife as the picture of the MF3, the MF3 has a "tanto" tip where as the close up is obviously not.

Good point, i didn't notice that before. It looks like the tanto is maybe not sharpened on the other side? Anyway, I hope he gets an officer/judge who shares your opinion :)

I guess you could grind down the top edge to make it legal. I live in Idaho and these weird knife laws blow my mind:barf:. We all carry knives here. It's a tool that helps us do day to day chores.

...I try not to poke fun at other people's tastes...but this sort of knife is the reason the word 'tactisexual' was invented.

All it needs is an enforcement by Tom Clancy and it would be perfect. :p

I would not take any chances.
States are near broke and needing that extra cash by arresting mere citizens who dare to possess such malum prohibitum. ( how dare us ? ) ;)

Otherwise...

Wow... what an unwieldy looking knife.

Correct! I just realized that this model comes in both tanto and drop point styles.

I know it looks a little mall ninja, and I could totally do without belt cutter, but for some reason I am hooked on ER knives. Getting the Nemesis last month was great!! At least until I ante up for a MADD Maxx!! :)

Important thing to remember, with regards to the whole "well, what's the definition of…" viewpoint: cops are typically not experts on law, particularly not case law. If in doubt, they will take you into custody and allow the legal system to sort things out. That might result in your release without charges, or it might not.

That is: it doesn't really matter if what you're doing is strictly legal, if your goal is to avoid massive inconvenience.

(Please note that I'm not slamming cops here, and neither am I saying that this is an ideal situation.)

This has two corollaries: don't be the kind of person that requires cops to exercise too much judgment, and try not to give either cops or prosecutors something to throw at you if you do happen to be searched.

Considering that you live in the Democratik Republik of Marylünd, you might want to opt for something that isn't black and red, double-edged, and is covered in all kinds of stabby bits. If you're ever frisked, and this comes out of your pocket, you're probably going in the back of a car. How 'bout a nice Delica?

This reminds me a little of "hmm, should I hire this guy?", or "hmm, I know she's kinda psycho, but do you think we should get married?" — if you're asking the question, the answer is "no" :)

IANAL, etc. etc. :D

Unfortunately, knife/gun laws usually aren't made by intelligent people.
