New ESEE Knife 5 & 6, serrated/non, clip/drop

I currently have the RAT-3 and RAT-4 and love them.....both plain edge. I recently picked up an izula and an izula II kit because I could afford it.....also the Becker BK-14.

I want to purchase the ESEE 5 and 6 to round out the collection. I am stuck on what to do, though.

I know the 5 is thicker and the 6 is a bit longer. If I was going to buy both, would it be worth it to get one of them serrated with a clip point? And if so, which one...the thicker or slightly longer?

I thought that the 5 might be better for batoning if needed. I also thought if I was going to have a knife with serrations that maybe the clip point would offset the amount of edge dedicated to the serrations.....so maybe a 6 serrated clip point and the 5 plain since it is a thicker, more heavy-duty blade.........or do I have it backwards?

I would like to have a knife with serrations on it in case I need it outside...I like sawing with the serrated edges. Would it be better to get the 5 and 6 with plain edges and then get a 3 or 4 serrated to have that part covered? I will carry around a 3 or 4 with a bag that I have (prefer a 3 since I can conceal it in my state) just for an FYI.

I'll patiently await your suggestions. Also, if you know if a good online store with a deal for a knife I'm looking for please PM me. If not, just give the suggestion and I can google it for myself. ;)

Thanks.

well the only one out of the 5 & 6 that comes Clip point is the 6 ,you can get either is serrated
you could get a ESEE6SCP ??

i agree with texastonydobbs,
that way you would have the 6 for the serrated and clip, and the 5 would be plain edge and regular. and you can baton with the 5 and keep the 6 for special stuff.

check your local laws -- does the clip point model count as a Dagger (double edged) and is that legal for you to to carry?

Also, check out the 5 pass-around thread if you haven't already... you may determine if you like the serrations or not from that review series.

There are no better serrations than the ESEE serrations.

5 or 6, serrated, take your pic.

I’m not big on the clip points for woods use.

OK, so the clip point and serrated is only on the 6"....that makes that decision easier.

Do you think it would be worth it to get a smaller 3 or 4 with the serrations and then a 5" or 6" (maybe both :o ) with plain edges? My rational is that it wouldn't be easy or practical to carry more than 2 knives. I could carry a 5 or 6 with a 3 or 4 serrated in case I need it.....I would also be able to carry around (EDC) either a 3 or 4, serrated or plain, and not break any laws (I know I can conceal under 3.5" and I can carry a 5" fixed as long as it is visible (in sheath on backpack/bag/belt.

Does that make sense? I'm not going to need a serrated blade a lot, but I like having one for rope and sawing small branches. I'd like to be able to carry a 3 (or 4) either serrated or plain in the molle-style clip.....I think it is pretty useful. I am almost leaning towards the 3 since I can conceal it but the 4 is a little thicker and I like that for a EDC-type knife.

Thanks for all of the positive, helpful responses!

I"d like that, but I am having a hard time finding it. Could you link it? Hopefully I'll find it before someone gets it to me but this forum has so many sub-forums I'm not sure where to look or what page it might be on.

edit: found it using the forum search button. Thanks!

Oh brother, how I have felt your pain. :D

The 4 is my favorite of them all, but a 3 and a 6 are a great combo to have as well.

The 5 is a great heavy duty knife that if I were going to be doing a ton of batoning I would probably go that route. Honestly unless it comes to doing finder tasks where a 3/16” thick blade would be better than 1/4”, I love the 5. It’s a hefty knife at 1 lb but it will take anything you throw at it.

Not sure if you’re seen the discussion, but the Laser Strike is supposed to make its way back in to the ESEE lineup one of these days. 3/16” thick 5” blade. It will be sweet.

Yeah, it is a rough (great) problem to have, huh? :D

From what everybody says, I'll probably end up just getting a 3 or 4 serrated and use it to alternate as a RAT/ESEE EDC and also to pair with a bigger 5 or 6 when going camping or whatever.

I personally love serrated knives and do not own a serrated RAT/ESEE. I think a 3 or 4 would prob. be best since the amount of serrations would be the same as a 5 or 6 (5 serrations for each size/style of knife).

Anybody have a favorite online retailer? PM me if so, but I've found some cheapish ones.

Thanks!

Serrations are not for sawing wood, use a saw for that.

Clip points are useful for one thing. The only ESEE that makes sense, to me, with the clip point is the ESEE-3. It is the only ESEE that is light and nimble enough to use for what a sharpened reverse edge knife is made for. It also fits perfectly on your bat belt or a vest, without taking up too much space.

Get a '5 or '6, but buy one that will do what you need. The only use I can think of for the '5 or '6 is woods stuff, where things like a clip point or serrations make whatever you are doing harder.

I'd vote for an ESEE-5. I dig my '6, but wish that I'd gotten a '5 or a Junglas.

Thanks for the input. I may buy the 5 before the 6 then get a 3 or 4 serrated based on the input from you guys. Now I just need to decide on the 3 or 4. I'll go dig them out and do a comparison since I have both plain edge.

obsessis... i would say get the 3. I figure the 5 will do everything the 3 cant. and the 3 will do everything smaller that the 5 cant. at least thats what I did. Ive got the 3 serrated.

Yep, that's my plan. I got a esee-3mils and will get an esee-5 EOM.

Thanks for all the input. I am a happy man.
