Hello I am planning on getting a smaller ESEE and am trying to decide betwenn the HEST or Izula with scales.... Help?

Well, what are you planning on using it for? It's hard to recommend a knife without knowing what roll you intend it for.

Uh Edc some thing where if it was the only knife I had I could beat the snot outa it and survive. Also I like thick blades and I know the izula is plenty thick. I would like to be able to baton with it easily.

Izula has a 4mm thick blade. HEST is .188" or 4.7 mm.
HEST has a 3" blade and full sized handle.
not sure I would plan on batonning either, but it'll probably be easier with the HEST.
OTOH, the Izula costs half as much and drops into a pocket nicely for EDC.

I'd probably go for the HEST just because its the size knife I'm interested in at the moment :D

I Figure that with the scales the price will be about the same plus I think I think i like the Hest sheath better. I like the full sized handle but i like the concealibility of the IZULA can you hide an hest pretty easy?

thanks

Between and Izula and a HEST for EDC, I'd go Izula. The Izula is shorter and can fit in the pocket easily. If you want a knife for hiking and camping, I'd go HEST. They are both thicker than a Esee-3, but the HEST has more cutting edge and full sized handle compared to the Izula. It features a mini-pry bar(which digs in my leg in the pocket), a bottle opener and a wire breaker though, which I see as good EDC tools.

Either way I think both choices would be good. The Izula with micarta is cheaper though, so If you aren't sure I'd get that. If you don't like it you can easily trade it here. They go fast in the trade forum.

+1 on the Izula. I just received mine, and though it's a small knife in my great big mitts, it's a comfortable knife, inexpensive, and looks (and feels) as though it can take some punishment.

Your second knife can be the HEST. :)

If you are wanting to baton with it, I would suggest the HEST. The full sized handle will be very helpful when batoning. Of course the longer blade on the HEST is better for batoning as well.

If you just want a general purpose EDC, I would suggest the Izula.

It's hard to give an objective answer without knowing the intended application for the knife... without knowing that, I think the obvious answer is BOTH:D

I have a HEST and feel no reason to get an Izula. It is superiorly comfortable with a full grip, the jimping/thumb ramp is awesome and I use the bottle opener all the time. It's plenty small for EDC. Plus, everyone and their 2nd cousins own izulas nowadays...

If you are looking for a knife to baton with and use for outdoors, I'd go with the Esee3 instead of the HEST. The RC3 has a longer blade, it's fully flat ground, and it's handle scales meet up at the tang of the knife. The HEST was uncomfortable to baton with because it's scales were slightly smaller that the handle scales makes the shock of batoning go straight to my hands.

Don't let the 1/8" thickness discourage you either, it's plenty strong to baton with. I've also found that the Esee 3 is less expensive on most sites. Just a thought.

Also, if you are looking for a good edc survival knife(inferred from the need to baton) a SAK would serve this purpose.

I would go with the Izula. It has a multitude of ways to carry it.

I'm finding ESEE knives are like potato chips - it's hard to stop with just 1.

Have an RC-5, looking at getting an Izula next...

I've batonned my izzie before, and it was fine afterwards a few days later cutting veggies and stuff in kitchen just fine at my aunts.

They aren't toys though, I accidently cut my finger with my RC3, I had to get stitches this past weekend, no matter how casual you get with a knife, remember it is still a tool, and VERY VERY sharp, these knives aren't junk. So either one you go for, it'll serve well. The izula is a great edc knife, the 3 kit in my dd bag, is far larger and noticeable than my izzie. The hest from what I have seen isn't that much more diff in size, so be aware it is a clearly distinctively sized knife, and also check your local laws for carry, if its out of sight in bag for hikes or such, than no big deal I guess, but they are a bit on the big side compared to the izzie.

I say get the izzie, than the hest.

There are trades to both, obviously the izzie will not be able to do slightly bigger task say the hest would be able and capable of, but than again it isnt as concealable as the izzie, carry one on you carry another in a pack or something. Its up to you, you know what and where you'll use them for :)

Either one and or both? You will not be disappointed!

My vote: H.E.S.T
You'll probably end up with both eventually, I know the hest is a bit more money but by the time you buy the scales for the Izula....... I don't know. I would get the hest now and later get the Izula folder.... there, problem solved.

I really agree with this concept. At least for myself.

A folder imho would make a better EDC anyway.
