So, some of you may remember me posting about a Rottie we were going to adopt a while back in one of Mark's "Friday" posts. Well, a funny few things have happened since then.

I got a call last week from the dog catcher's wife (I was a little worried at first. My wife and the dog catcher didn't part on the best of terms due to a misunderstanding). Apparently, the dog we found had gotten out again and when they took him back, had some conversation with the owner. I was told that if we still wanted to adopt the dog that I should call the owner. She gave me the number and I thanked her and hung up the phone.

I talked to the owner. It seems that the dog belongs to his nephew (who is having some personal troubles at current) and was dropped off at his uncle's house a couple months ago. He hasn't been getting along well with the uncle's bulldog (at least 2 or 3 fights I know of) and he could either go to us or to a Rottie rescue. We asked if he could hold onto him for another week since I'm out of town this week. He agreed and said we could come visit him anytime we wanted to.

So, on Saturday we went to take him for a walk and let him play w/ our dog a bit. He was in pretty bad shape from fighting with the bulldog. He's got a large, oozing, infected lump on the back of his neck, a cut by one eye, a torn pad, the tip of one ear shredded, and various other little bumps, bruises, and bites. Needless to say we took him on Saturday and got him to an emergency vet that evening. He's on pain meds and antibiotics and is being very good natured in playing with our other dog despite his bad experiences, aches, and pains.

My wife has her hands full with the two of them while I'm away, which I feel pretty bad about, but neither of us could allow him to stay in the situation he was in. Haven't gotten any pics of him since we brought him home, but here's one from when we found him the first time.

Everybody say hello to "Judge"

Good lookin pup. If you've never had rotties before, the first couple of years can make you want to tear your hair out, but then they'll settle down. Have had three over the years, and the current male (neutered) is Theophilus, Teddy for short.

HERE COME DA JUDGE, HERE COME DA JUDGE, HERE COME DA JUDGE !!!

Sorry...Old 'Laugh In' joke.

Good on you and the missus, deker! May Judge be a Blessing in your life as you've already been in his....

You know, I can't tell you how many times that's gone through my head since we got him :)

I just talked to my wife. She had him to the vet today and he's scheduled for surgery Wednesday. They looked at the mass on his neck and fear that there is crushed tissue from a previous injury. They want to open him up, remove the mass and sew him shut again. He's also got a hernia that needs to be fixed (we knew about that) and needs to have the boys removed so he'll quit "marking" and not make any more little Judges around the neighborhood. I'll have an estimate tomorrow, but I have a feeling that I need to really get busy in the shop and actually see if I can make a few knives worth selling to pay off his vet bills.

It just burns me up that people can treat animals the way they do. Granted, this wasn't the guy's dog, but even if you're watching an animal for someone (oh, by the way, the nephew also agreed to surrender him to us...forgot to mention that) and the animal is hurt, you take it to see a damned vet! He KNEW the dog had infected wounds (I'm sure of this since the dog catcher told him and related the story to my wife) and did nothing about it. He even tried at one point to pass off the lump on his neck as a "skin condition" that the vet had told his nephew about. Once it ruptured you could easily tell that wasn't the case. The guy deserves a baseball bat to the face in my opinion, but he's the closest neighbor to the right (about 1/4 mile away) and I don't want to cause any bad blood.

In any event, we're going to try and heal him up and see if he can manage to fit into our family. In the worst case there will be one really loveable healthy Rottie headed to a proper Rottie rescue.

Thanks for the kind words folks,

Hi Judge,my name is Holley and I'm a three year old Rottie. Dad left the computer on,hope he does'nt catch me ;). Looks like you found some good folks there,as I did here  . Be sure to teach them right. Just remember that the big guy with the boots on owns the house but you can get away with about anything as long as you give him those big brown puppy-eyes.Call me anytime..........................

Oops, here comes dad. We can get together and chew some expensive exotic handle wood......................

Good luck with the new servants...................byebye :D :D

deker, if you want ill be the one swinging the baseball bat for you. i hate animal cruelty alot. everyone time i see someone throw rocks or hit them with a stick or something i just want to grab my shotgun and............ im going to stop there before i get caried away. im really glad hes going to a good home and is being treat for all his wounds by a caring vet and has a loving family waiting for him to come home. when i was a kid i had a half rottie/half catahula (cow herding dog) and he was great. if you ever come to texas for a show and you end up bringing the dogs with you and you need someone to watch them while yall are attending the show you can bring them here. the dogs will get plenty of exercise and play time here. keep us posted on how hes doing. take care man.

He is a very lucky dog to have people like you and your wife caring for him and giving him a wonderful home.
I'll take dogs for friends over allot of people that I know.:D

Thats great. I'm on the list for a boxer from Boxer Rescue right now.

Hey...........

How's that dangerous, unpredictable, mean animal fitting in??? Holley says "hello" and is hoping everyone is adjusting well. Got any pics to post yet???

Well, Judge is doing fine. He's recovering well from his surgery. The sad news is that it looks like he may not be able to stay :( Our other dog, Justice, simply won't leave him alone. It's a constant struggle for dominance that they can't seem to work out. He's clearly stronger, but she just won't let up. It's to the point that I actually have to hold her down when I know she's tired to get her to lay off of him and go to sleep. I need some kind of miracle of dog psychology here to make it right. My wife is going to visit the in-laws today and taking him along so that everybody can get some rest (and I can get some shop time!).

Anybody want a really sweet Rottie who just needs some love, a comfy place to sleep, and a little basic training? He's in good health (now) and up to date on all of his shots, etc. He's a super-quick learner, it's just hard for us to give him that little extra bit of structure with the other one causing such chaos.

This sucks.

I'm realy sorry to hear that!! :( I had hoped that he fit in like he'd been there all along. If I had room and time I'de be on my way but living in town, one is enough of a challenge. I hope he can find a little room to make his own!!

you feel like taking a drive to texas? id be more than happy to adopt him. he will be in good hands here. he has plenty of room to run around. a nice place to sleep. and will receive alot of love.
