New Favorite Little Knife (relatively cheap, too)

Everyone remembers the classic newbie post -- "Serrations or plain blade." In fact... being pretty much a newbie myself I am sure I posted the same question 6 months back. Well... we all know one of the classic answers -- Why not get a Spyderco Dyad or Dyad Jr and have both. That answer never really registered with me and I usually thought double blade knives those aren't tactical they are for Grandpas or something.

Over the last month I have been looking for a small combo-edge knife(I like small folders and just wanted a combo edge for the heck of it). Well... at a gun show (not many knives) about a week ago I saw the Dyad Jr micarta handled version and I was like this is a cool little sucker. I should have bought it right then, but being the overthinking consumer I am I wasn't sure the guy was giving me a good price(turned out he was and then I was really mad I didn't just buy it). So I went home and researched here and ordered one. Got it about a week ago and have been carrying it a lot lately.

For about $50 the discontinued micarta handled version is nice (not real hip on FRN and I wanted a clip so never considered the lightweight version). Blades are ATS-55, about 2plus inches(one fully serrated and one plain clip point), and handle is about 3 inches. The micarta looks nice enough to carry even when semi-dressed up. Blades are very sharp, as sharp as my Reeves and Benchmades. Centering nice, clip nice (black with spyder) and opening smooth with a little Militec application.

Only concern is on the edges of the micarta and around the pins the micarta has a whitish/grey tint or film (you can only see in certain light). Other than that it is a great little knife with all the edges you would want. If you like small knives this one fits in your hand well and opens with the spydie hole pretty easily. It is thicker than an Umfaan and other single blade folders, but that gives it some weight which makes it feel more substantial than other small knives.

Long use it would probably get uncomfortable, but for small tasks you just grip so the hump of the other blade sits between your fingers and it feels pretty good.

Sounds like a winner.

Don't feel bad about passing up a deal you weren't sure of, though. A little research goes a long way towards keeping you solvent! After a while, you get better at pricing and you can go ahead and buy on impulse again. :)

JTurner,

It's good to see that you took MY advice, and got yourself a Spyderco Dyad Jr. They are one heck of a good little folder.:).

Also, that "whitish/grey tint or film" should wipe-off with a slightly oily rag.

It is a nice little knife for the money!! Good choice!

I will try the oily rag trick. It really isn't that noticeable. Yep... I am liking it. Smooth, locks up nice, and sharp. Can you tell me anything about ATS-55 steel?
