Hello Everyone,

I am looking for a New Field Knife, I currently do not own any Chris Reeve Knife's this will be my first. I'm looking for an all purpose knife one that's good for anything that I can throw at it. I know that Chris Reeve put out really good knives and I'm finally going to find out first hand. I'm thinking about the Mark VI, the Pacific, or the Green Beret. Any help would greatly be appreciated, thank you in advance for the help. Semper Fi

I have a Shadow IV and a Mountaineer ll
I love the single guard on the Mountaineer ll.The one piece line is great for the fact that you have that hollow handle to keep all sorts of stuff.

The one piece knives are great, I have a few and can defo. reccomend them for your needs

The one piece knives tend to roll in your hand while choppings. I recomend you watch a ceetin you tu e video before buying a CRK.

Bark river make very good bushcraft and skinning knives

dude, if he wants a CRK, just let him get it. if he doesn't like it he'll be able to sell it for not much of a value drop, but don't come in here and crap up the forum when he's already told us what he wants. just be cool. most people don't need to baton their favorite knife through an anvil.

When you say 'field knife', what do you intend to use it for?

I've got a Green Beret and a Shadow IV. They are both great knives, but have different strengths/advantages. It's hard to recommend one without knowing your expected usage.

Yes?

As an all-rounder the Mountaineer looks pretty good to me, but I can see where the skinner could be a great 'field knife.' Yeah, the skinner looks really good...

Damn, I may have just talked myself into a Skinner.

I have 13 of Chris Reeves One Piece Knives. 2 shadow 1's, jereboam 1, tanto 1, pachmayr, shadow 4, shadow 3, mark VI, knonka spearpont, mountaineer 2, tanto 3, sable 4, aviator. You can see that I admire them greatly. I have used many of them. You have to ask yourself what blade size are you comfortable with ? I feel the shadow 3 and aviator are on the smaller side for heavy use "field" knife. I carry my shadow 3 quite a bit, the sheath rides high and tight, plus they do not have the storage space in the handle the larger ones do. For a "field" knife, I would recommend one with a 5" blade. I like the spear point as you can see most of mine are spearpoint. I also like the double guard if you plan to do any heavy chopping or camp preperations. It will be harder to chop with a 5" blade than it will with a larger one. The 7" and 9" models are great, but some people do not like knives that size. IMHO, I like the Shadow IV. It has a near industructible point, it is just the right size, not too big, not too small, no serations, and double guard for even more protection. The sheath is top notch as well. A great package. If you want something larger, IMHO, the Shadow 1 all the way. It is not as big as you think. Stay away from serations like on the project 1 & 2. Odds are in the field, you are not going to have the sharpener to sharpen them, so when it gets dull, you have aprox 1 1/2 of useless blade, not too mention, it weakens the blade. I want plain edge spearpoint all the way. Hope this helps !

Since you've never used one, let me advise you, the all steel handle will retain heat and cold. Reaching for my shadow IV in the desert, taught me this lesson. It's still my favorite tool, beside my Beck. Everyone wants to hold it once they see it, don't turn your back on them, they'll disappear with it. Good luck with your purchase.

A Medal of Honor winner once told me, "A man's combat prowess is generally inversely proportional to the size of the knife he carries."
If you want a knife to do "field chores" with there is absolutely nothing wrong with the skinner, and it is damn hard to beat when used for what it is designed for. Even from a defense aspect that board heavy profile can have some advantages. Dont believe me, have a look at some of Col Applegate's designs.
If you want a more traditional combat knife that will also do field chores the Shadow or the Mountaineer are hard to beat. The Mountaineer is really a much finer and better made profile of the USMC combat knife, and that has worked pretty darn well for nearly 70 years.
I have been to -40* and 126* they worked just fine in both places.
By the way, no knife was meant to be an axe, that is why they make axes.
My two cents after 24 years of wearing a uniform.

Amphibious Tuna and Chicagousmc,

Thanks so much for your sacrifices for and service to our country.

If your time in the field is spent backpacking, the Mountaineer 1 is hard to beat. Lightweight and compact.

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to thank everyone for there advice I guess I should have mentioned that I already have a field knife that's I use it's a Busse Skinny Ash. I have always wanted a Chris Reeve Knife so after careful consideration I decided on the Shadow IV. I look forward to taking it to the field and putting it to the test. Once again thank you everyone for your comments and suggestions. Semper Fi

After thinking about my previous post..........You seem to want something in the Mark VI size. The Mountaineer II has a clip point with a single guard. A Mark VI has a clip point with a double guard. The Shadow IV has a spear point with a double guard. I have All 3. I personally feel the double guard is safer for heavy use. The sheaths are different as well. The Shadow IV & Mark VI sheaths house the blade only and have a cross strap with snap to retain the knife. The Mountaineer II has no snap, the knife fits deeply and snuggly into a sheath and only has about 2" of the knife handle exposed. The Sable IV has this kind of sheath and I carried it hunting last year and it worked great. My Vote: I Like The Super Heavy Duty Spear Point Of The Shadow IV with the Mark VI being a Close Second !!
Check out truenorthknives.com , they have excellent pictures of all 3 of them.
