Just got this beast in the other day. For less than $100 it's a tank of a knife.

Zerobladeplay posted this in the general section. Hopefully its ok to quote his pic.

Is it me or does that look like fine G10 instead of the usual coarse G10 I see in other pics? If so thats a most welcome change. My pants pocket thank you Cold Steel :D

Yea the g10 on the clip point blade is pretty fine but still really grippy! I notice in pictures that the spear point seems to have the more aggressive texture. I took another forum members advice and used a old pair of pants to "sand" the g10 down a bit.

I'm really liking how this knife has no liners and is just solid slabs of g10. Really gives it a blade heavy feel.

I ve always had to sand the g10 under clip of my Recon1s. They are a great value.

I emailed gpknives and they sent me a picture of the stark difference. Top is spear point bottom is clip point.

After comparing those in our current inventory, I can say there is actually quite a large difference between the handle texturing on these two models. The Cold Steel Recon 1 Clip Point (27BC) has what I would call a fine texturing and almost a smooth feel (not completely smooth as there is a bit of texturing, but also not aggressive in any fashion. The Spear Point (27BS) model is the opposite as it has a very aggressive texturing and grippiness. I've attached a picture as well as you can actually see the difference in the models we have in house - the 27 BS is the top knife and 27BC the bottom. Most likely, Cold Steel has enacted a rolling change and one is newer production than the other.

Much better IMO. I like their CQI changes. Always wished the lawman has this thicker smoother scale.

The Lawman has the relatively smooth g10 scale, thinner than the Recon1. I ve always liked the AL fine for its thin, light profile. But as Ive read your posts about preferring the thicker handle, like the Recon1, and comparing the two side by side, I think I agree with you. Thicker handles would be more ergonomic for a medium hard use knife, which is how I use my Lawman.

I have an older Lawman with Aus8 steel and the handle feels like rough sandpaper. Maybe later ones are smoother?

:) It's pretty easy and simple to mod the coarser ones to whatever degree of smoothness desired .

Somewhat harder to add more grip texture to the too smooth ones , so don't overdo . ;)

The newer one they started doing in 2015 is smoother but also much thinner. It’d be nice if they kept the same thickness and use a smoother texture. Basically what they are doing now with the Recon 1

yeah if you own both the older and newer lawman you’ll feel the big difference. The older lawman isn’t very thick to begin with, when compare to knives like griptilian. It didn’t need fixing imo.
The other thing is the solidness of the older thicker scale. The older scales give the knife a very high lateral rigidity. I had problem with a few newer lawman with thinner scale(i had 6 of them) and because the scales are thin, sometimes they aren’t 100% straight or have small warp. You can squeeze the thinner scale and sometimes you’ll feel a bit of movement around the stop pin if the scales aren’t straight. The older ones are rock solid, a feeling lost with the new one.
