Just upgraded from a 7 or 8 year old quantum accurist PT on a 1 piece Shakespeare ugly stik and some power pro 50lb braid. I now have a 1 piece berkley lightening rod with a new shimano chronarch e series and power pro 30lb. Tell me I dun good :-)

That lightning rod will feel light compared to the heavy Ugly Stick. I have some old Lightning rods. The 5.5 foot ones with pistol grip handles. They were good rods at the time. Im sure the newer ones will work just fine.

Ive never had a chronarch reel but have some older curados, that are fantastic reels. I think you will love it.

hard to go wrong with shimano. i have only had one reel from them that was crap. cant rmeember the name off hand. i have a lightenrod. not my favorite but it works. dont expect it to last as long as that ugly stick though. uglies are tits when it comes to strength but you do lose sensitivity. the lighting rod will be better in the sensitivity dept.. i think you did ok with these purchase. as long as you are happy with it thats all that matters

Get out there and use it, then tell us if you done good :)

(BTW, I think you'll be happy)

When you get some more cash,
upgrade to Boca Bearings on that Chronarch
about 30 bucks a pair, that reel will humm pure sweetness
A lot of the Shimano rods are real nice also

Wow! This setup is like air compared to my old quantum accurist pt and ugly stik. Anybody famaliar to the shimano weight system, what do you set yours on? I think mine came with green and pink weights, i forget whats inside the reel.

Ugly Sticks are heavy. Once you go graphite you never go back.

I was just at an outdoor store and was comparing rods. They had an IM8 Shakespeare for thirty bucks. In the hand it felt as light and responsive as their two hundred dollar rods.

On the magnetic brakes, I use as few as possible. Sometimes two for heavier lures and four for lighter.

I used two all day long. That drag is the smoothest I've ever felt. Light too. Amazing reel. It will be my go to rod. Caught a decent bass on it.

i still love my ugly sticks. esp for catfishing. that cronarch is nice. curious why you spent 200 on a reel but only 40-60 on a rod. i am not a fishing snob at all but thats like putting a ferrari motor in an impala.

Well, if hes like me he got the reel on clearance somewhere. I only paid 30 dollars for my Curados. I have some good stuff and most of it came cheap.

Yeah. Well i look at it this way. If i can afford a 200$ reel at the time, i can get a decent cheap rod to hold me over until i get more money. An expensive rod and cheap reel don't fly with me. Been there done that. I'd rather have a nice smooth casting, smooth drag reel i'm comfortable with using all day and a rod that i can count on to do what i need it to than a really nice rod, which don't get me wrong, a good rod is the key to a fishing setup, but being disguisted with a reel sucks. And i can get a rod anytime, but getting a good reel isn't something i can spring for. I don't know how else to describe it lol.

Suzuki. If you ever get a chance to see the Shakespeare Agility rods , check them out. They are cheap rods, but they sure feel nice in the store. A place here has them for thirty dollars. If I needed a new rod now Id take a chance on one for that price. IM8 graphite , light , and thin.I held them side by side expensive Falcons and they felt just as nice.

Wow. IM ratings aren't really what they used to be. Shakespeare IM8 isn't as good as G. Loomis IM8. But, i believe ya. My berkley lightening IM6 is an amazing rod for what it is. Better than my ugly stik!

well of course. however, IM8's regardless of who they are made by are more sensative than IM6-IM7. lighter too. i do not buy expensive rods either.
