Hey all. I'm looking to buy a new fixed blade knife for myself, kind of an X-mas present. Here's what I need...
Blade of at least 3.5", but no more than 5"
Rubber or Zytel handle (no leather or metal handle)
Jump sheath or Kydex sheath (no leather sheath)
Serrations on the blade are preferred, but not necessary.
A double-edged blade would be preferred, but again, is not necessary.
Cost has to be $70 or under.

This will be used mainly for utility / every day cutting, but should also be able to double as an effective fighter. I had my heart set on a SOG SEAL Pup, but I've heard that for the money ($59 US) you can get a better knife.

I've narrowed it down to the following:
Cold Steel Peacekeeper
Benchamde 10510 Gamer
SOG M14 Mini Pentagon
Kabar Impact Series 1460
Kershaw Vertigo
CRKT M60

It is not easy to find something with a first rate Kydex (of Kydex like) sheath for under $70. I would suggest the Spyderco Tempeance even though it may cost a little more than $70 (although FWIW, I see that it allegedly starts at around $70 on froogle).

The Temperance features an ergonomic, light weight FRN handle, a flat ground premium steel (VG10) blade that cuts like there’s no tomorrow…and it's offered in both full serrated and plain edged versions (I would get the plain edge anyway). There’s even an unsharpened Temperance drone available for training.

I would stay away from anything double edged for utility; they are not very useful for most things at best and dangerous (and illegal in many jurisdictions) at worst.

Would be nice if you could find one of the small Camillus CUDA CQB knives for that price. I bought one of the 6" CQBs on closeout for $30 - nylon sheath, designed by Frank Terzuola. The CQB was also available with a hard plastic sheath and partially-serrated edge.

Have you seen the AG Russell Deer Hunter / Hunter's Scalpel / Bird and Trout? Available with choices of high-quality steel and thumb-release hard kydex sheaths.

I'm a fan of the Buck Pathfinder / Woodsman / Special, depending on which size you prefer. Way under your price limit, hard plastic handles, but leather sheaths.

Happy shopping,
Bob
