New Fogg Bowie that I can't afford.

This looks like Don's most recent, only now more money :o and they should have used Don's photos.

Anyway it's a beautiful bowie

There's the blade. There's the handle. There's the guard. There's the HAMON!

Great knife, but way out of my price range. If I am not mistaken, Don was selling this knife for somewhat less.

The Connellys appear to have snagged this beauty from Don.

Someone is going to have a VERY nice Christmas!

Peter, I am very disappointed that you posted this, seriously.

It amounts to touting for Los Bros Connellys. As they are not, if I recall, paying members here-Not cool!

I have very mixed feelings about Don selling to purveyors, when he is moving everything he makes with pretty fast speed on his own.

On the one hand, it is free advertising for him, which is a good thing. The Connoleys also take plastic, which is a good thing for the buyer.

On the other hand, those that buy from afformentioned parties are being separated from dealing directly with the maker, and are paying a bit more for the privilege.

On a personal level, I feel that their "no trade" policy does no one in this community a service.

Best Regards,

Steven Garsson

Steven,

Your points are well taken.

For the record, this knife was offered recently, by Don, on his website for $3,000. The Connellys pulled the trigger first and I suspect paid the asking price or very very close to it. A similar blade sold at the $3,000 level from Don's website a short time earlier.

I posted the knife here, in order to give my fellow custom collectors on BladeForums a heads up on a very rare and exciting blade, so that they can at least have a chance at it, before some Philistine scoops it up. (apologies to any Philistines on the forum).

I felt that the benefit outweighed the "plug" for Knifeart.

Best,

Peter

Peter, you and I are friends, so let me first say, this is not an attack on you, nor is it intended to be taken as such.

I agree with your position. It's just that you could have linked to Don's site easily enough, or linked to the other post in Customs that, I think, Joss posted.

Either way, thanks for posting such a stunner again. I can never see enough of Sensei's work.

Best Regards,

Nah. Dedicated knife dealers provide a great service to the knife market. Liquidity is a good for buyers and sellers alike.

I think that one of Steven's points is that KnifeArt provides zero liquidity for knife sellers, because they do not accept any trades.

This piece was on Don's available page for more than a day. I don't have any problem with the Conellys pulling the trigger on it. It's not as if Don had contacted them before anyone else.

WRT Don, the Conellys are increasing liquidity, and very much so, since Don barely has anything available. Think about it this way: I've now had 2 opportunities to buy this knife. If it had been bought by a collector, I would only have had one. (In this specific case, I can't afford it anyway! :) )

Don sells his knives on a first come, first served basis. He doesn't offer dealers a better price, so I guess Knifeart were the first to say I'll take it. I have no problem with that.

How many dealers do? I know of only two makers that will apply the full purchase price of a knife you bought from them in trade for a more expensive knife (their initials are LR and BN). A terrific policy, but far from common. Unless I'm missing something. Wouldn't be the first time.

Roger

PS - That is a fantastic knife that I STILL can't afford. But once again, I applaud Don for putting up such fabulous offerings direct to the masses.

Not really....I tried to get it the same day that it was posted on Don's site...and I wasn't the first in line,or this conversation wouldn't be happening right now.

Most knife dealers will take trades but only a couple will give you what you paid against another, that is if you bought the knife from them. The dealers I deal with are passionate about custom knives, some are in it just for the money.

I remember checking Dons site for a couple of days after he posted this bowie and it wasn't marked sold

There was a problem with Don's e-mails being filtered as spam. If everyone on his mailing list had known about this bowie I'm sure it would have sold much sooner.

I also watched it for a couple of days after seeing it(and sending an email)Thinking..wow maybe I got it.I don't like to come across as pushy or impatient,so I didn't follow up with repeated emails every day,I then got an Email from Don saying he's using a new service for his contacts as some mails were getting tagged as spam, and to re-sign up for his email list..So,perhaps my initial offering fell victim to that.I was disappointed, but no so drastically as it really was beyond my budget at the time,but...DAMN look at the thing!...so I was going to stretch myself a bit for it.The hunt is half the fun eh?

Speaking Of;Someone's got a Don Fogg Shiv on ebay right now. It's at about $500 w/3 days to go last time I checked:cool:
