Checking out some of the great online stores I ran across a great sale on the Pacific Salt PE Blk/Blk with H1 steel. I'm a big Spyderco fan but am selective in what I like. I've tried the Endura in the past and just didn't care for it and sold it off. I was a bit skeptical that the Pacific Salt would be just like the Endura, but for the price, I couldn't pass up the chance to try it out. It arrived yesterday and I couldn't be more surprised how much I like it. I usually carry my Military or Para2 (both at the top of the heap of all knives I've tried) but the PS was a pleasure to carry. It's amazing what a few ounces difference in weight can really make. I forget it is there.
Here is a pro/con so far:
Pro:
- light weight
- SHARP!!! (big surprise being a Spyderco)
- Prefer the blade shape and handle shape to the Endura
- Bigger hole (that's what he said!)
- Light (3oz)
- Love Spyderco's black blade coating
- No liners (not a pry bar, but I have a pry bar for that)
Cons: (not really con's but just things I've noticed)
- slight blade rub on handle when opening. This is probably b/c of not having liners and the thumb pressure when opening on the blade pushes the to the side a tiny bit. No biggie, I'll take it for the weight savings.
Now I can't really rate this as a con but I will share this.. When I was opening/closing the knife at the table, I hit a pint glass rim (filled with glorious Dogfish Head 60min IPA) with the edge of the blade. It put a nick in the blade (very small). I don't know if this is due to the nature of H1 or if a VG10 version would do the same thing. It was a blockhead move on my part and I'm sure Sal would agree that glass is not on the approved cutting list for his (or any) knives, unless they have a diamond blade I don't know about. It will come right out in the 1st sharpening I'm sure.
Short story long... Me likey! Think I'm going to order a full serration version soon.
