This month I'm looking for a new custom\handmade folder for EDC. I've been looking at all the different pieces out there and am still coming up blank at this point. Right now I'm looking for some suggestions\makers, etc. Prefer to stay in the sub $700 range.

Here's my criteria. Must have at least a 4-4.5in blade, decent finger guard, tip-up carry, and a framelock. Overall prefer a defense-oriented design, and no tanto points. For some reason I'm having trouble finding something that "talks to me". Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Check out some of Bill Vinings stuff. He makes a great folder. I got one a couple months ago and it is flawless perfection. He is not as well known as some of the other big name makers but he is sure doing work equal to theirs if not better and his prices are good IMO. http://www.medawebs.com/knives/default.htm

Greg Lightfoot's Full Contact Fighter perhaps? I don't know for sure if it's tip-up carry, but it meets the other marks you mention.

Just checked out his web site .....his filework ROCKS! And his prices appear to be 50-60% lower than comparable work by other more well known makers.

If you are referring to Bill V. Yes his file work is awesome. The folder I got from him pictured above is one nice folder. I've paid way more for way less than I got from Bill with that one.

You are probably familiar with Tom Anderson's designs (http://www.andersoncustomknives.com/)

While at the Eugene knife show, I saw some knives by Keith Ouye, a Hawaiian knife maker. Very strong-looking handmades, workers, not show pieces. Unfortunately he seems not to have a web site, but maybe he can send photos.

His knives were $450.

what about Bob Dozier Thorn Dagger? 4 1/2 spear point blade, flawless classic design, d2 steel, great for utility and self defense, great lock... 600 $

Just checked out the RJ Martin folders, and aside from the clip orientation, I believe they are just about what I'm looking for. Somehow I managed to overlook him in regards to a folder, I guess I was still thinking he was a fixed-blade only guy. Thanks!

Been carrying my RJ Martin Devastator for the last little bit and still am amazed with how great the grip on it feels in my hand. It is a hand filling grip with rounded carbon fiber overlays with two front finger cutouts. Not to mention that razor of a blade! There is sharp, then there is RJ Martin sharp!! :D  :D
