I'll be working up a prototype of a new small fixed blade. I'm calling it the PSN ( personal survival necker ). They will be made with CPM 154, 1/8" thick by 1" wide. They will be similar to my standard PSK knife but with a slight handle modification. The will be standard with a kydex neck/pocket carry sheath. What I'm trying to decide on is overall length. I'm either going to go with 6 1/2" overall with a 2 3/4" blade, 2 1/2" cutting edge or 6 3/4" overall with a 3" blade, 2 3/4" cutting edge.
Any thoughts on overall size?

Go with the bigger one. The bigger handle will give the user a bit more leverage and control.

I've been alright. I've experienced some curtailment of camping activities of late but as they say "Happy wife - happy life" ;) I saw your Hawk Mtn. pics, looked like a good time. I hope to catch up you you sometime this spring or summer. Hope your having a fine winter bro.

I've had the typical winter blues. Getting out with a few buddies last week was just the ticket to feel better. Hope you can make it down for my campout in the fall.

I have a Micro Tusker that I use as a necker.....most of the time. It weights in at 3.76 oz which is about the limit for me in the neck comfort department. I have no problem with a bigger knife, but keep the weight down. Skeletonizing the handle is one method, thinner scales is another, perhaps a combo of both??

I figure if you aren't doing something funky with the handle, like a specific 2 finger grip, go for the full 6.5 to 7 inches OAL. So I'd vote longer for more handle.

I don't know how you feel about it, but for a necker on the weight issue, I'd see about 3/32 in that steel, with a 1 inch breadth it will be plenty strong. That's not a thin blade bias comment :D it's just one way I'd keep the necker weight down without sacrificing handle. (If it's skeletonized, 1/8 for sure)

Thanks for the replys. I've got the steel which is 1/8" by 1". I was going to go with thicker scales, 1/4" each side but will stick with 3/16" each side to keep the weight down. We could do a passaround to get more feedback.

My 6 1/2" overall's always want to be a 7" to 7 1/2" overall's:thumbup:

My 6"ers always stay 6"ers for some damn reason:D

Looking forward to it scott! I too have a 6" overall thats new for 2009 that I havent even gotten pics of yet.

Passaround? Sign me up.

Oh, I like more handle than blade. Especially on smaller stuff. Smaller blades seem to be more utilitarian but not if there's not enough handle to hang on to use the blade.

More blade less handle, more show than go:thumbdn:. More handle less blade, more go than show:thumbup:.

When the passaround coalesces please put my name on the list. I think that you mentioned this steel for use as a knife for surf fishing. I am very interested in this steel.

Thanks - Swoop

I'll get a proto together and we'll do a passaround. Might not be for a few weeks. Thanks for the input so far. I think you guys will be impressed with this steel. I know I am with good ol' 154CM. CPM154 is suppose to be much better.

my first choice would be the smaller simply because i dont have a lot of room to hang a neck knife...
but the logic of these esteemed gentlemen must win out.

I made up a 6 1/2" overall for the passaround. This is better for pocket carry. I can offer them in both sizes that way a person can have a choice. I'll post a pic of them blade later today.
