Had an old hollow log in a woodpile already cut . Out exposed to copious recent rainfall and cold weather .
Drilled a 11/8 " hole in the thinnest side of the log, with a ship auger , near the base . Cheated with a battery powered drill .
Put some tinder in the top hole and eventually got the log dry enough to burn on its own alone .
Once it got going , burned pretty clean and nearly smokeless . Definitely could cook on this for a long time !
Better to have a nice dry log and a resinous type wood would be easier to start .
Still , I'm happy with my very first try !
