new forged tanto

O.K., now I see I'm going to have to forge a tanto soon! That's a graceful blade! How long is it and out of curiousity how thick is the average tanto at the spine?

Very nice. I was relieved to see it actually is a tanto, and not one of those chisel pointed things.;) :D

Thanks everybody. Yes, Silent, you WILL forge a tanto. You want to forge a tanto. You have been infected now. I don't think there is a golden rule on spine thickness at the notches (machi), but 1/4" is pretty common and some, like yoroi toshi, are at least double that! The one in the link is 5/16" which is about my preferred thickness for a blade that size. The overall length is approx. 12" and distal tapered.

Now a question everybody. I'm not in the fittings biz, but if you all were to fit or have this blade fitted as your own, what kinda features and materials would you personally prefer? Sheathing? materials? habaki? menuki? tsuba? aikuchi? anything. I'm curious.

Oh I see now, I'm being seduced by the dark side! I---must---stick---to---one---blade---type---and---master---that---type---before---moving---to---another---style. ARRGG! But it would be so easy, I've already got it planned in my head and I have these bags of Satanite here just crying out to be used as a clay coat. Yeh!

Let me think about the fittings. I'll actually have to get out my copy of "The Craft of the Japanese Sword" ad go over the terminology again!
