New Forges

Another new knifemaker and myself spent a couple of days putting 4 forges together. We went the low budget route. We used 8'' ductile iron pipe cut into 16" lengths, welded angle iron shelf on the front, piece of steel on the back, and 1" rebar legs, and 1"pipe with a thumbsrew to hold a JTH-7 torch. We're lining them with Inswool and Bubble Alumina. I fired the lined 1 up and decided to reduce the chamber size, more Bubble Alumina just arrived from Ellis and I'll finish both in the morning. Next time I'll look for 6" pipe on the job. The Inswool was an ebay find for $20, enough to do 9 or 10 forges, JTH-7 & thumbscrews from home depot, and the bubble alumina from http://forgegallery.elliscustomknifeworks.com/ were the paid items. I hope they work:D

Scott,I built a forge about 7 or 8 months ago with bubble alumina. That stuff is pretty flux proof, especially the way a greenhorn like me fluxes things.

My son-in-law is into his third forge design and I've lost count on the mods to each. He bought one of those portable air tanks from Wally World for $20, cut one end off and lined it with two layers of inswool. He cut two holes in the side for the air/gas intake. He also cut a hole in the door and lined it as well. The pictures are of my first son-in-law, Jacob, pounding out a R/R spike. He was lovin it.

Our daughter came in to watch her husband forge and yelled to Jacob to pound out his frustrations.

Disregard all the "junk" laying around the shop. I'm in the process of cleaning it out and setting-up the forging area and knife benches....a work in progress. I picked-up a 350,000 BTU propane blast heater ($25) to keep me warm during the winter while I clean out.

hi i'm tommy gann abs js the forge i made is a vetical one out of 16 inch pipe. with the blow and fuel inlet on side and at the bottum . and the open holes at the top this is for getting even heat and keep the flux off when you don't need it on it.
