There has been too much off topic stuff going on in this forum. I don't mind it too much, but we're getting mission drift and that takes away from the site as a whole. I opened a new subforum for you guys to chitchat in, Around the Grinder.

It's for paying members only... so you get to help the site stay open as well. All other off topic threads will be closed as the occur in this forum. Let's make this work people.

Spark you're the Man and we'll do it! Thanks for listening and for giving us our elbow room.

Ohhhh Yah!
Personally, I'm not gonna be able to make it (my parents think there are better things, and I'm on a dudget.)
Anyway, happy posting
Just wanted to get this in while I can.

Well, for the stated reasons above, I guess this can be the cheapskate's O.T.

SO THEN
How long did it take yall to get actually set up and going after you decided to get into knife making. It has been a good 2 months for me, and I still need to learn how to weld.

I've given this a lot of thought Spark. The single thing that sets this site apart from the others are the members. One reason the members tend to get along is that it is a kitchen table type of discussion. There is a tremendous amount of technical information that flows through this site every day and only occasionally a post that's out of line. Lord knows, I've made more than my share of OT posts and Hijacked a few.

I don't think either has reduced the technical information available here. The name of this forum is "Shop Talk, questions and answers" I've never been in a shop where the discussion was censored to the point considered by this split.

When the board is further sanitized and split into friendly discussion of everything .....and dry dull facts and figures, you lose that warm friendly feeling.

IMHO....it's a major mistake unless you have received a ton of complaints.....but then again, it ain't my board !

It's your board, do what you want. I happen to agree with Dan, I ain't seen nothing that takes away from the forum. I guess I will just read the posts and not reply one way or another, that way I can be sure not to do something out of line.

Damn if you do, damn if you don't. Seems pretty simple to me. If it's fishnet stockings you're talking about, it don't belong on the main board. Poets, unless they are knifemakers don't belong on the main board. Going off topic during a serious thread don't need to happen.

Sitting around the grinder is for when you are reading a thread about some aspect of knifemaking, one that's getting a lot of replies, and the little man in your head tells you to post about the old 84 Ford station wagon you used to own and all the sudden everyone is talking about your 84 Ford station wagon. The guy that started the thread along with serious posters on that thread might laugh at what you posted but inside they are pissed.

The week that generated the new forum was full of that stuff. We've always had OT and didn't really mind it. That week brought it to a head.

If it relates to a knives, knifemakers, supplies, and all the other stuff we've talked about since this board started, it's still ok.

If it's about shooting pool, panty hose, 84 Ford station wagons (unless you got your knifeshop set up in one) and anything else that doesn't have squat to do with knifemaking, put it in the OT forum. Yes, I did get alot of emails and PMs complaining about it and I agree with them.

The concensus was that you guys didn't want to go to the other boards (W&C, Community, Gadgets, etc) like everyone else does here on BF.com. I asked Spark to set the OT forum up, so you guys wouldn't have to.

A little common sense and respect for the other members of this forum is all that's needed.

Whatever...

Thank you Spark and well said Kit. I was getting a bit tired of the non knife stuff being posted.

Kit, I deleted this post before I submitted it. You have enough problems already without me posting it.
I emailed it so you can let Spark know how I feel!

well I resemble that remark :o :( BUT it's Home :D
it's about time we got a grinder round table to talk around :)

does this mean that IG has to give up the nets? :footinmou :D

Kit,

I didn't aim to step on your toes. I just stated my opinion. I just hate to see this place become like another forum that I don't go to anymore. Too business like if you ask me. There are just a few places that I go now. So what, if you're discussion leads to 84 fords or IG's pantyhose. If someone doesn't want to read about it, they can use the back button on their browser. Again, I am just a basic member and I don't own this place. I was just telling you how I feel. I hope you won't take this thread as a personal insult. It is not intended to come off that way. I like the commradere that is shared here and that is the only message I was trying to convey. I don't post here often except when the need arises or I can help someone, but I do read the posts just about everyday and consider a good many of the people here my friends, even though I haven't met nare one. Have a wonderful day and pound/grind that iron.

Anthony, no sweat. I got hard skin and didn't take it wrong. Just trying to make people see that it will work, if given a chance.
Go ahead and ante up for a Basic. It's worth it. Especially if this is one of the few you still visit.

Those who are concerned might consider that the existence of an OTF doesn't mean the regular forum won't go off topic. Or that the moderators have to bust every offence. But if that is where you are headed, or perversely take every thread, then you know where you belong.

more like a friendly neighbourhood hardware store to me... someone walks in with a question/need and others point to a tool on the wall and give tips on how to use 'em...

 I think things are working out fine..grossly off topic was the intent I believe.

We all have those days where we want to rant/rave, I am guilty of o.t. blather[is that a word] oops their I go again.
I am thrilled to have a direct line to so much talent and information. Being able to tap into a variety of oppinions at the click of a key is great.
Thanks Dan, Fred :D
