New Forum Possibility?

I am throwing the idea out for a new forum. Not really "new", but change an old one. It was brought up by Don Rearic a couple of times in different posts. I agree with him and see the need for a password protected forum dealing with self defense. To many times we get a serious discussion, and trolls come in and ruin it. We can't discuss the topic without it turning into a brawl because of trolls. I would like to see a new forum for this, or convert common sense self defense into a password protected forum. Any of you folks out there agree with this idea? What do the administrators feel about this? Please keep flames off this post. If you want to tell me what an idiot I am for suggesting this, then e-mail me.

I think this idea has a lot of merit, and some potential problems. The WC forum is password protected so that people asking for the password are warned that the penalty for copying or posting anything outside of the WC forum is banishment from All of BFC. But anyone can get in by simply asking for the password.

If you really want to prevent trolls, you will need to have a human being decide Who gets in and who does not. That brings up all sorts of concerns. Folks denied admittance could complain that they were being unfairly discriminated against.

In general I am all for anything that will reduce or eliminate the sniping going on between the 'tool' guys and the 'weapons' guys. And some of these annoying folks do not even seem to like knives at all, which begs all sorts of questions about what their purpose in being here is at all.

This thing is up to Turber. I do not know if a password protected forum will help. It all depends on how admittance is administrated. I certainly would not like to be the one making those decisions.

i like the idea, but i think if we do it,it should be with a new forum.i think we should keep common sense self defense open to all.

Jeremy, good idea, but ... do we really need password protection? The problem is, first, self-defense in the general forum, and second, trolls anywhere.

Self-defense should probably be moved to a tactical forum. Trolls should be edited out. That's what moderators are for, keeping the discussion on an even keel.

Borderline trolling should be ignored, not answered -- it's easy to get into a kind of reverse trolling, enjoying the flames that someone else started. I've seen people here defend that, but it does destroy the real discussion.

Moving tactical threads to the tactical forum is already the policy around here. But the recent discussions were about the Idea of self-defense with a knife. That topic is OK in the general forum, as the discussion should be of interest to most of us because of its far reaching implications.

I can not start editing out posts that I think are Trolls. Deletion of posts and threads is considered Very bad form around here. It is a last resort sort of moderation step. Links to pornography, or disclosure of personal or private information about someone, or blatant hate posts would be considered for deletion. More subtle trolls threads and posts are harder to control.

Not responding to these things IS the best solution. We seem to have developed a bit of a 'wolf pack' mentality recently, some folks actually enjoying the opportunity to attack fellow members who they feel are trolls. I can not start making these sort of decisions unilaterally without raising a Real Big Stink about over-moderation. I will do all I know how to encourage everyone to BE NICE, but I will not start deleting posts without serious, compelling, and urgent need.

Yes you can. I think one of the Moderators in the Sword Forum is your age? I can't remember which one.

I don't know why this is being discussed in the general forum; most of the denizens of the tactical forums won't be aware of it here and no one who doesn't read the tactical forums we already have would have any interest.... I suggest moving this thread to Practical Tactical.
