We're flying out Saturday morning to Clearwater Florida, to visit an elderly relitive. Not wanting to loose any of my edc knives to the TSA security gestapo, I'm leaving most of my cutlery home.

Not wanting to be totally without a pocket knife, I'm going to bury a Vic classic down in my checked bag. I thought about taking a larger knife like my old Wenger SI, or yella CV peanut, but I don't know if they will be going though the bag once its checked and out of my sight. I've heard tales of stuff disappearing from baggage. I still have a couple of the 3 dollar classics I bought at a gun show that ironicly were TSA confiscations. I figured to stick one down in my shaving kit, and see if it is still there when we land in Tampa. If it is, then I'll at least have something with a sharp edge on it for the time I'm in Clearwater. I guess I'll put the P-38 and Sears pocket screwdriver back on my keyring.

It's gonna be an interesting 4 days.

Hey Jackknife, I am about an hour and a half from Clearwater. We should get together somewhere.

jackknife, many moons ago I lived in Clearwater. If you have time to, you would enjoy running up old hwy 19 to Tarpon Springs, which is a very charismatic old Greek fishing harbor and sponge diving village with some of the finest food in Florida, imho. The people are really special there. The history there is real.

Travel safe.

I can give this place in Venice a good recommend. Accessible by land or sea.

Mama Maria's maybe?

Last year I had to fly from Reno to San Diego to oversee a casino installation for [LargeCo Gaming, Inc] and didn't want to risk my EDC stuff.

At that time, EDC was my 25-year-old Gerber Silver Knight (which used to fly with me everywhere prior to 2001), a Leatherman Wave, and a Kershaw Leek. Altogether, about $160 MSRP combined, and one of them is an irreplaceable/out-of-production/sentimental piece.

Trip to Wal*Mart, picked up the Gerber Mini Paraframe ($10), Gerber Suspension multitool ($27), and a Buck 174 Cutback ($25), total cost $62+tax. All cheap, none sentimental, all functional, and easily replaced if any or all went missing.

Those three have become my "travel hardware" for when I have to fly anywhere.

Used to be, I didn't bother to check baggage on a short hop; now I have a checked bag no matter how short the hop is. When I get where I'm going, I take the first opportunity to "get dressed" after I touch down.

For my last flight, I added a large Böker sodbuster and a Rapala folding fillet knife, as I knew I'd be driving a 26-foot truck 900 miles back to Idaho. (Gotta have kitchen knives on the road.)

I'm not a fan of flying any more. Well, that's not true, really. I still like flying. I don't like air travel.

Flying is airborne navigation of the skies, enroute to a destination.

Air Travel is institutionalized molestation by proctology school dropouts.

Personally, I think everybody boarding a plane should be issued their choice of a) a medium sheath knife, b) a medium folding knife, c) a small, light hatchet, if they're not already carrying something of their own.

Air travel would become downright civilized.

Jackknife,

If you want to avoid the risk of losing any of your sak's, drop me an email and give me the house address where you will be staying and I'll send you one of my hair popp'n sharp peanut's or SAK classic's(your choice) to use while you are down here. I will include an additional parcel, self addressed back to me..

And the day you depart back home just drop her back in the mailbox back to me. That way you will feel right at home down here in the southland.:D

Let me know.

Anthony

I really don't think you need to worry about TSA goons stealing your pocketknives. I've flown a lot over the past two years and always have some combination of a Classic, Leatherman Micra, Victorinox Soldier, Case peanut and/or Buck 55 in my baggage, with nary an incident. Has theft ever happened? Sure. I'm not saying you should bring anything with sentimental value, but leaving heirlooms behind would be sage advice on any trip, no matter the mode of transportation. Just remember, you can't believe half of the stuff you read on the internet. ;)

At any rate, have a safe flight and a great time. And try to hook up with El Cuchillo. That might be a lot of fun.

Thanks guys for the generous offers. I've flown down to Key West in 2003 and 2005 for Karen's cousin's reunions and had a Vic tinker in a checked bag with no problems. I guess I'll take my Wenger SI and stick it down in something like the pocket of rolled up jeans like I did last time.

ElCuchillo, it's going to be a tight schedual, but just in case, where is your gator park? Maybe we'll be able to fit a reptile trip in.

It's in Orlando. The good thing is, it's a half day park, so you don;t have to be there long to see everything. However, I am off Sundays and Mondays, so if it's tough for you guys to get out, WE'LL come to you. It's all good. Just let me know.

Despite being able to accompany your luggage to inspection and relock it yourself I don't chance it with my firearms. I always ship them out to my destination ahead of time and them ship them home when done, you can do the same with knives if you just plan ahead a bit.

Or you could just buy a new knife while there and ship it home the day you leave...or give it as a present to a relative...

Well I have lost 1 Queen and 1 Case knife to those people when I have been traveling and for me that really hurts because I just don't have a lot of bucks to replace them. So now I just grab a red plastic handled Vic when I travel. So far no problems. So maybe I just got lucky or they like Queens and Case. I don't know but it sure upset me.

Gents, we're moving a little far afield for the Traditional Forum so over to "general" we go.

I just flew into and back from Tampa and I put my knife in my DOB kit in the checked bag and no problems at all.

I was thinking that if I were to fly with a pocketknife in my checked-in baggage, if it has a keyring or bail (like most SAKs), it may be a good idea to somehow secure the knife with some type of attachment in the bag or case. Maybe not foolproof, but at least someone couldn't just quickly and smoothly swipe it without going through a series of steps.

I've flown more times with knives in checked luggage than without and this includes large sheath knives like Sog Seal 2000 without a problem. Trying to get it through in your carry on is where you'd encounter some problems.

I've flown a number of times on business since 2001. I put my knives deep in my bag or in my shave kit. Haven't lost any yet. But all of my EDC's are fairly common stuff, so I'd not be totally devastated if the went missing.

I've flown with some pretty expensive knives before. When I went to Blade Show a few years ago I wanted to take my Hinderer down with me so I took a thick zip-tie and attached the knife to a belt loop of a pair of jeans. Then I clipped it to the jeans pocket, folded them up so that the knife was inside with the fold only open towards to back edge of the suitcase. My thinking was that most of the time when things are stolen they are just crimes of convenience. Someone sees something they like and that they can easily grab without anyone noticing. By making it more difficult to get to, and to get free of the bigger bulkier clothing I felt pretty safe and it made it there and back again. Then again, I also checked about 5 other pieces that I picked up at Blade as well on the way back and they made it safe too so maybe I'm just lucky :)

Don't bother hiding your knives. They x-ray your bags and if they see somthing they think looks suspicious, they'll open your bag and find it. They know where to look, all the hiding places.

I travel 50K + miles a year and take a BM mini presidio, McCusta, Leek every time. Haven't lost one yet. TSA did loose my Norelco razor tho on this last trip. I'm betting they just forgot to put it back in my bag. Dips--ts. Oh well, it needed replaced anyway. :(

If you're worried about theft, do the zip tie thing explained by Slide13.
