New Foxes Folly Arrives Part II

As I mentioned in the other thread, the second FF on the special "too heavy" order arrived a bit ago. I was worried as hell, but needlessly as it turns out. First time I can recall that 2-day "priority" took 5 days to make the trip! Dan had mentioned that one of them (that ArchAngel snagged) was Chandan handled, and the other another kind of wood. I asked for the second one, as I already have several red chandan pieces, but it appears that the two are identical in that regard. The handles look the same to me; no problem as I love that wood anyway, so it was just a miscommunication (unless there's a 3rd one of these guys out there?)

I didn't measure this to the extent that Archangel did, but I'm sure his width and other specs are very close to mine. The knife (by Bura) is 21 3/4" long, and weighs 29.3 ounces, or 1.347 oz. per inch. The handle is done very well, no loose buttcap thank goodness (although I did not do the side-loading test that AA did that caused his handle to shift a bit, just chopped a bit on a 2X4 with good results), and in all respects seems to be pretty much a twin to the other.

I compared it to the original 49.5 ounce horn handled Kumar Foxes Folly, and took some pics. The 20 ounce weight variance makes a huge difference, not to mention that the new one _seems_ much longer, but in fact is only about 1" longer than the original. It has been sharpened very well and is a real slicer. The blade is one of those that feels almost alive, and I'm sure most of you know what I mean. I ran a file quickly down the edge and it sounded like little bells or wind chimes ringing. I re-read ArchAngels post and he mentioned the same thing on his. Like him, I don't know of another khuk I have that sounds this melodic when touched to metal, although the New Kobra I got last year is close.

The karda and chakma are finished plain, whereas on the old FF the chakma had the cap rounded and carved. Not a big deal, but it would have been a nice touch here as well.

This is a very nice knife, but I am really looking forward to a lighter model with a shorter blade within the original specs that we asked for. I followed Yvsa's lead and ordered 2 of the new run, so should end up (I hope) with a smaller brother to this guy. Hopefully the Kami's will adjust the final models based on the input they have been given so far, but as Uncle used to say, they seem to do pretty much as they like!

Regards,

Norm

P.S. I'll never be a good photographer until I handle the light better, but in any case the difference in the spine widths is remarkable, as is kind of shown in pic #3. I figured Bruise would appreciate the reading material in the picture! :D

Better not let Bruise see those pics. They show the evil "Dune" books.

What a great looking knife. I really should stop looking at these pictures. its torture.

COOL! We have 2 matching sets from the looks and sound of it.
I hope yours feels as nice as mine. I like the feel of the new Bura FF better than the older Kumar version. Kumar makes handles fit for giants. Bura's handles better fit my hands. That is my only complaint with Kumars work. All of the ones from him that I have are handled in a BIG way.
Did you bring your new baby out and thrash her a little? It is worth while just to make sure that it holds up.
I hope to be able to folow your lead and get a smaller one if a spare shows up after the big run comes and goes.
BTW, how do you post multiple pics in one post. I must be dumb because I have not figured out how.
Congrats again on your sweet new blade. Now lets see all of those other new ones! HEE

AA, I just chopped up a 2X4 with mine and due to the sharp blade it did a great job. I didn't do any side load testing, although with such a long flat blade I probably should have; I may do so later.

As far as the pics are concerned, I just click on "manage attachments" and browse and click UPLOAD each time for a max of 5 attachments. Each one must be under 100K to upload. I am getting towards my max allowed pic space, so guess I need to go back and delete some old pictures in previous threads.

I am busy trying to free up shelf space for some of my new acquisitions, but when done will post some pics of the new Malla that was in the 4/4 specials.

I try to avoid posting anything that could be considered "bragging", which is why I don't post more pics because someone always seems to take it that way!, but the handle on this Malla is amazing work and the knife balances like you would not believe!

Regards,

Norm

IIRC, the order stated that the FFs were to have regular k's and c's so as to help standardize the project and keep it as simple as possible.

Another beautiful khukuri Norm!!!! :D

You know it's the drizzlin sh*tz that the kamis couldn't have done this on the original run of the Foxy Folly, guess I've already said that though.

I'm still of the belief that the shorter Foxy Folly will be the epitome of what I think a khukuri should be when the kamis get the weight right. :D
The heavier prototype is damned near there.:)

Good point; I did not recall that. Makes sense to me, and they did a nice job on the ones sent.

Thanks Bob.

Handle reminds me of the one on my "Bulldog" villager. Just found that one the other day. Guess you have HIKV when you discover khuks you forgot you had. Either that, or you're not working them enough. Or you're getting old.

Thanks for the pics - excited about these, excited about the shorter siblings. :D

Bulldog Villager? Is that a model, or a nickname you have for it? Sounds interesting.

NO! Norm, post more pix. It's practically a duty. There is just not enough good khukuri stuff on the internet. And the Deal of the Day pix really don't cut it, detail-wise, because it's an overview of a whole bunch.

By posting good info & close up pix, you're doing us all a service, and helping cantinistas decide if they really want/need some new khuk.

Bragging is typing, "Suckers! Eat my dust! I've got 86 khukuris! Muahahahahahaha! And I'm not through YET! "

My apologies to those who actually have 86. They're out there.

Norm,
What AA said is true. WE want you to post your pictures and thoughts on your new khuks! That is how we learn how neat a certain khuk is that we may not have realised we needed, YET!
Actually, one of the things that was requested when we got khuks, back in the ole days, was a review of how it performed for us and what we thought of it.
We really need to get back to that habit. It was a good way to learn how the Kamis were doing on the quality and it helped each other on possible decisions to get a certain khuk.
Besides, who else but us folks understand this love for the bent blade! ;)
Post away Brother!!!

Norm,

Your shop area is entirely too clean.

It ain't natural!

Hey, that's just the part in the picture! You should see my other benches that are covered with car parts, khuks and various other projects.
