Posting a pic for Sarge (sylvrfalcn). Nice work Sarge!

Made a heavy duty frog for my Bilton, sandwiched in between it and the scabbard is a special sheath to house the karda and chakma I made for it. The karda and chakma blades are ground from files, the handles are carved and polished white tail deer antler. Sweet huh? If you could stick the pic on the forum the gang might get a chuckle out of it. You know what they say about "idle hands"."

That's great Sarge. Are the blades of the karda and chakma epoxied into the antler? Any tips on drilling the handles? I have some 5/32 x 3/4" O-1 and want to make a couple of Karda. I really like yours.

Steve

Steve, on drilling the handles, I use an old hand cranked drill to drill pilot holes, and then use needle files to open a slot for the tapered tangs. Epoxy takes care of the rest. On bigger knives I either insert wooden wedges on either side of the tang to fill in the half moon gaps left by the pilot hole, or just cover the end of the handle with a brass hilt plate slotted carefully to give a gap free fit around the tang/blade juncture.

But you ain't got time to be fooling around with munchkin knives, what with two nice khukuris waiting to be finished. I'm itching to see how them boogers turn out.

Beautiful job, Sarge!

[whisper]Pssst, Steve - be careful about posting pics for "basic members." The supermoderator will hunt you down and admonish you for fraternizing.[/whisper]

Point taken Mike, I just tried to buy a Gold membership but can't get it to process (razzin' frazzin' AOL) tonight. I'll hook it up on my lunch break tomorrow. I've been yakking on here plenty long enough to have invested in a paid membership, thanks for jogging my conscience.

p.s.: thanks for posting the pic Steve, I didn't mean any harm by it

Actually Sarge, my wisecrack was aimed at Blues. :p I'd post a pic for you any old time. :)

Sarge - what do you carve your antler with? I've got a few sheds down on the workbench that I may try to tinker with.

Thanks fer sharin!

Rag, I use a dremel to carve antler. Wear a mask if yer gonna work it, it aint good to breathe powdered antler, horn, or bone.

Keith

Dremel tool? I've heard of those. I use one of my homemade knives for roughing out, and a file for smoothing down. Listen to Keith though guys, you do not want to be breathing the dust generated from grinding, sanding, etc., any part of an animal. It's bad ju ju.

Sarge

Thanks Sarge and Keith. I've used a dremel on it in the past to make blackpowder accessories, want to try something different. I have a few kardas that might be up to the task.
