I figured I would share a new axe design I am working one with you guys. This one is more bushcraft/woods oriented. The first batch will be made from my all time favorite carbon steel for tough knives, L6. It takes a wicked edge and is super durable. These will be thinner than my other axes at just under a 1/4". This will make them considerably lighter and they will cut even deeper.

Here is my drawing, I should have some progress pics to share in a few weeks. OAL will be about 11 3/4" with a 3 3/4" cutting edge.

That is very appealing to the eye. I love the bearded design. I have a question.

How high will you bring up the scales or wrap? Its would make for comfy choking up if you went all the way up.

Also, your design would be neat scaled up to like an 18" length with the head only slightly bigger.

Thanks! The grip will go about an inch above the highest hole, so a choked up grip will be very comfortable.
I may do a bigger version at some point.

I like the pattern, looks nice. I wonder about the balance with lack of any type of poll though.

I finally am making some progress on these!

I designed these with hunters and bushcraft in mind. I have had lots of requests for a lighter axe geared more towards wood cutting than tactical purposes.
This version is made from all time favorite steel for toughness and being able to get scary sharp! L6. They are right at .220" thick.

Drilling holes for the handle scales.

Cleaning up the profile on a super high tech work rest. : )

Rough Ground and ready for my heat treat!

Will this be a one of a kind or are you going to be makeing
more, because this is something I'd be willing to drop some money on.

I like the design. Not sure if I have ever seen a bearded hatchet before. Looks like it would be a fantastic chopper, although from the pictures it almost looks like the edge is hollow ground. Not sure about the longevity of such a grind for the application. Yet again, L6 is some tough stuff.

Thanks for the comments guys!

Thanks. It is flat ground like all of my axes and tomahawks.

Oh okay. The way the light reflected off of the edge in the picture made it look hollow ground to me. What color scales do you plan on putting on it?

Looking good so far, Ben! You know I'll have my fingers crossed for canvas micarta... ;)

I definitely plan on making one of those mine. I think it would serve me well while out scouting and hunting. I am wanting orange or orange/black G10 though to match my hunting blade combination.

Thanks guys I am working on 5 right now. I am happy taking requests for handle material or orders, but lets keep that via email as this isn't a sales thread.
