Just received my new GEC #48 Trapper. It is beautiful BUT I noticed that the tip on the wharncliffe is bent a tiny bit.
I may be able to fix it when I sharpen it but I dont know for sure. I appears that it may have been bent prior to factory sharpening the blade.

Should I return it and get another or should I attempt to fix it?
Is this common?
Anyone have a similar problem?

It is the right blade in the photo below.

It's difficult to tell if a few minutes on a stone would correct it without compromising the tip. If in doubt, send it back.

I'm not one of the steel experts on the forum, but based on other posts, I think bending it back will almost certainly snap it. Sharpening it would only entail sharpening off the end point, which is a possibility for a user, but perhaps unacceptable for an expensive knife like this. I would send it back and not do anything to potentially void the warranty.

If I was going to use it, I'd just sharpen it. If I wanted a collector's knife and leave it in the tube, I'd send it back.

It will be a user. Problem is that the vender is out of this cooor and model. Also I believe that I might have to pay return shipping.

If it's a user, as you said it was going to be, I don't see the problem. Sharpen it, use it, and move on.

That looks like a very tiny bend. If it bothers you send it back. If not, sharpen it out.

I showed my wife and she couldn't believe I was bothered by the bent tip since it is really tiny.
I am so tempted to try and sharpen it out. I am hoping that just a lite sharpening should do the trick. I would guess it would but I am afraid that I could be wrong.

Contact GEC and have the factory repair it if it bothers you. http://greateasterncutlery.com/warranty/

Thanks for the option. If I sharpen it I would assume that GEC wouldn't replace if I couldn't fix it on my own. I probably would have to pay shipping also if I send to GEC.

Yes, most factory warranties I am aware of do require you to foot the bill for shipping to them.

I'm sure if you couldn't fix it to your satisfaction; they would be tickled to give it a try. If it came like that, ask the dealer to cover your $6 to send it back to the factory. If they won't and the shipping cost get between you and being perfectly happy, I will cover the $6 - no sense in not being tickled every time you pull it out.

Great news! I sharpened my knife like I normally would a new knife starting on the side with the bent tip. I made sure when I was working on the tip area to go only in the direct of the tip to try and straighten it out.
It work! I now have a nice straight blade that is super sharp.

It wasn't extremely bent to begin with plus I didn't feel like going throughout the hassle of getting a new knife and having to wait for a new one so I took a handle but luckily I fixed it.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions

Awesome. Glad to hear of a good ending. How do you like the knife otherwise? I'm thinking of picking this exact model up but maybe in african blackwood. :)

So far I love it. It has 2 really usable blade. The blade pull is a little lighter than my GEC "Charlow" which I actually prefer. Blades appear to be centered imo.
They African Blackwood looks really nice online. I almost bought that one instead of the Autumn gold.

Glad to hear it sharpened out easily. I too dislike sending knives out for service. Post some new pics!

Nice of knifeswapper to offer the postage!
Way to go, Mike!!

Good One Mike!

Good to hear that i worked out for you.

Good for you Mike for offering to put up the shipping cost.

So far i've been loving this knife, i've been using my 2012 Bladeforums knife practically since i got it. And since this has the the same blade configuration in a smaller package i had to go for it. Enjoy the knife its definitely a great one.
