On the GEC site are images of a #73 folder. It appears that the tang stamp reads Great Eastern. Does this mean the knife is being produced in 440-C?

Just called GEC, which I should have done in the first place. I was told the knives are all fixed blades in 1095. Surely wish they were folders in 440-C!

There was a run of 73 two blade Scout Trappers in 440C released last Spring. 735212EC with Drop Point Main Blade and Spey Secondary. Shop around,I'm sure some are still available.

Yep, great knives...

But I think many are looking for this in 440c

Still, the fixed blades don't look bad. Orange delrin, black canvas micarta, and nifebrite.

Yes, they look quality to my eye. Just see how good synthetics can be on Traditionals.

I have a very early 2006 73 scout in stainless, I very much like the bone (the spring is hell even for a hardcore heavy fan like me...) but I'm not struck on its bulk. Keep brooding about having it converted to single blade but I frankly can't see anybody being able to do it without cracking the handles :eek:

I can't recall the details but there were some early GEC knives that were thought to be stainless but turned out to be 1095. I'd bet Jeff or Trand know the details.

I think that only applies to the fixed blades although there was a run of H73s I think in 440c. The single blade acorn shielded #73 I have posted is probably the one you're thinking of for folders. Its neither 1095 or 440c but actually 420 that was a SFO in burnt stag and bone (1 or 2 kinds, don't remember). The best way to tell so far, afaik, is if the knife has "Cyclops Steel Works" on the blade then its 440c. This one doesn't have the Cyclops mark.

The only stainless #73 I ever had was this one from 2007 in ivory casein, a milk protein based synthetic.

Storing it the same as all my other knives, it shrunk badly away from the bolsters, then cracked. Ryan Daniels was good enough to exchange it for me at the BLADE show a couple years back.
