This GEC Northfield Powderhorn with jigged, green antiuque, bone, handles arrived via USPS. The knife
is based on GEC's Toothpick pattern and comes with a clip blade and a pen blade each blade having it's own spring with no half-stops. The pull on both blades is a 7 on a scale of 1 to 10 - just right. The knife is 4" long closed with the clip blade being 2 7/8" long and the pen blade being 2" long. The fit and finish is excellent. Both blades of this knife are very sharp out of the tube.

These are handy knives and carry well in the pocket. I have two other Powderhorns (had two - gave a Primitive Bone one away) and the Burnt Stag version I have left of those two has been a real workhorse.

This one with Ebony covers came in a week or so later.

Looks great Ed!
Don't usually like the Toothpick models, but these look good.
Thanks for the write up.

Thank you for the photos and info. Maybe it's a silly idea but I wonder if GEC will produce this pattern with a hook disgorger/bottle opener... maybe a fish shield too.

Thanks Stu. I don't usually like the Toothpick models either what with the long, Muscrat Clip, blades they normally have but the regular clip blade on these Powderhorn models really sets them off along with the secondary pen blade. I see though that just recently, GEC has started offering a single blade version of their Toothpick model with a regular clip point blade.

Real nice, Ed. They did a good job - I like that the jigging runs right to the bolsters.
They have really raised the bar on quality and finish!

I recently got one just like yours, Modoc. Love how the color is even and dark bolster to bolster. No hint of color fade on mine at all. (Wish they could acheive that on all their colors) Didn't think I'd like the extra thickness the pen blade brings, but it still feels great in the hand. I also like how there's nearly zero run-up of the pen blade.

Maybe you've noticed it or maybe you haven't but take a look at the thickness of the pen blade and the pen blade's spring -- both thinner than the clip blade and the clip blade's spring. Makes for a nice thin, easy cary, two blade, knife.

I need to get powderhorn. These pictures made sure of it. Just gorgeous combination, albeit I generally like more muskrat style clip blades, in powderhorn regular clips suits well. I find the small penblade extremely handy and usable blade. Its the one I miss most in my #12's I already have. I do like new single blade clipblade "#12's aswell. Its about time to get new #12's which are one of the most ergonomic knives I've had pleasure to hold and own.

I do like 'em thin and therefore prefer the single blade t'picks, but this one still feels really good and I don't find it to be too thick.

I don't have one of these yet but I felt the same way about the #48 Trappers... The pen is thinner stock on those too. In fact, its probably the same thickness as one of these powderhorns, just a different handle shape. Its really not much more noticeable, especially if you're going from a thick stag single blade to a smooth wood or jigged bone handle, but that 2" pen blade makes the knife so much more versatile. Great looking jigging and color on these guys!!

A really handsome knife, Ed. I have one of the GEC Toothpicks and it just cradles up in my hand like no other knife I've held.

Really nice on the knife and mini-review Ed! I thought about getting one of those before I ordered my dark green bone #53 myself! I really like that pattern; looks like it would be a real work horse!

I've been eyeballing some of the GEC knives for a while. I was looking at the toothpick on a vendor site the other day, and found myself wishing for a 2-blade version, with a pen as the secondary (I've been 'obsessing' over two-blade jacks lately :p). This appears to fit the bill perfectly.

Very nice, Ed.

I get what you're saying. The way the rear bolster is up-swept on thes knives really helps them to disappear in your hand.

Ed, I blaim you... I went and ordered Ebony Powderhorn just based on your review!! Thank you :D
