I received this 4 1/8" GEC #531310 Rancher (Cattle Knife) w/dark brown jigged bone covers. As stated the knife is 4 1/8" closed with the main clip blade being 3" long, the sheepsfoot blade being 2 1/8"long, and the spey blade being 2 3/16"long. The clip blade has a long pull and all three blades have a pull of 6 1/2 on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 bing the stiffest. Note there is no shield on this knife which in my mind helps highlight the bone jigging and overall appearance of the knife. Perhaps GEC didn't install a shield as this is a Prototype but I don't put much stock in that as I intend to carry this knife for chores around our place. I like the coloring of the bone - kind of an amber, brown, color although GEC simply calls it Dark Brown. As indicated by its model number, the knife was built in 2010, The knife has two springs with an extra piece of brass liner laid alongside the outside liner which precludes krinking of any of the blades. The clip blade rides it's own spring while the sheepsfoot and spey blades share a spring. The fit and finish of this knife is excellent and the ringed, pinched, bolsters set it off nicely.

Congrats, this is a pretty one. The jigging is very attractive and I agree that having no shield is an advantage this time.

Beautiful knife and I do believe the Cattleman is becoming my favorite pattern!

Ed......

Beautiful.......I always like what Mike does on his SFO's.................though there never were shields placed on the 3 and 4 blade versions................

That's a beauty Ed  I'm liking that pattern :)

That's a real nice knife Ed.
I like it sans shield, looks good.

Was GEC dyeing/jigging all their own bone by 2010?

That is a nice one Ed. I have seen those on his site, and I really admire that jigging. Looks almost like a honeycomb to me. Sweet!

Very nice knife! I was eyeballing that one myself. If I were to get one of those, that's the one that would have been my first choice. Great looking color and jigging!

Edit: Just went to see if my second choice was still available (Reddish Brown/Orange Bone), and it too is now gone. Hopefully GEC will do more with this style of jigging. It really looks great on the dyed bone scales.

Nice one. I'm fairly certain that's not GECs worked bone. Was either some Mike had on hand for the project or it was likely made when GEC purchased their bone slabs already jigged.

Stu.....

GEC was dying and jigging there bone all in house 2yrs prior........and biglmbass is right on, the dyed jigged bone used was supplied by Mike for these knives.............

I like it because it's a big knife but elegant. The bolsters certainly give it a sleek look. The colour is really appealing and the unusual jigging somehow reminds me of reptile/gator hide :D Most kool:cool:

Thanks for the info. I didn't remember seeing the jigging before is why I asked.
