Here's the new Gerber SLG folder - ATS-34 blade, G-10 scales and all at a super price. Take care.

I got one of these. Nice knife, very light weight. Ti liner and locking bar, very tight lockup. Deep pocket clip for tip down carry.

Fred--
The new Gerbers look like an improvement over the EZ-Out, not only in steel, but also in the blade to handle ratio (and the thumbstud is definitely better than the EZ-Out's thin slot for the thumb).

I'd be interested in knowing the difference in thickness between the SLG, the new AR, and the EZ-Out. Any info?

I cringe a little bit, when I see Gerber, Buck, and Al Mar finally getting the hang of designing nice-looking, well-built, tactical-style liner locks, just as the rest of the industry is moving away from liner locks and beyond the tactical format.

Anyway, that's a really nice looking knife, and if it's built as well as it looks, it should be a winner for Gerber. Assuming liner lock fans aren't moving en mass to the axis lock, rock lock, rolling lock, compression lock, integral lock, etc!

This knife is thinner than the AR and the EZ out as one would expect. This wasn't Gerber's first imported tactical knife. The big Michael Walker would be their first, I believe. I think the larger manufacturers are doing lots of interesting things after being motivated by the tactical knife world. Camillus has CUDA and Becker, Buck has the strider and some new models in BG42 steel, my favorite knife announced at the SHOT show this year was the Schrade Lake and Walker, also done in BG-42. These are some examples.

The other influence, I think, is probably Columbia River because they've had a lot of success with quality made Taiwan imports. The CRKT products are obvious examples of high value. Certainly that has motivated these companies in a serious way. Everybody is working to gain market share so it certainly isn't a surprise.

I suspect the smaller companies will continue to be the major innovators, though. If it weren't for innovations from companies like Spyderco and Benchmade, Emerson and REKAT etc. the fashions wouldn't have been altered to what they are today in the knife world.

I agree, the SLG is a great knife for the price. I can't think of anywhere else you can get high tech materials in a knife like this at its price. I think it's basically a good thing for the knife knut. The big guys can make them less expensively so value continues to climb.

Take a good look at the Becker line from Camillus, as an example. These are a significant increase in value in the hard use fixed blade world. Gerber is now getting involved too. I'm glad to see the bigger guys releasing modern knife designs. Take care.

Imported from Taiwan right? The quality must be superb then.

Score! More points for Taiwan!

Taiwan: 3 (1 for CRKT, 1 for Junglee, and now 1 more for Gerber)

Mainland: 1 (Nothing for Frost Cutlery, 1 for those C.A.S. Iberia swords which aren't bad at all)

We got them Mainlanders beat!

I agree that this is a great looking knife, and considering the price looks like a steal.
As an aside, I have never owned a Gerber knife, but have been considering the Air Frame. Noticed that you do not have it listed. Do you sell this knife.

Comrade Chang. You could add several other manufacturers to the Taiwan import roster including Outdoor Edge and Timberline. Junglee, though, are made in Japan.

Keith, the Airframe is announced but not yet released. As soon as I get pricing and availability it will be on the site. Take care.

Junglee is all made in Japan? I thought some were made in Taiwan. Oh well. No big deal. I am part Japanese too!

So the score is:

Taiwan: 5 (1 point each for Jaguar balisongs, CRKT, Timberline, Outdoor Edge, Gerber)

Japan: 4 (1 point each for Spyderco, Junglee, Fallkniven, Cold Steel)

Red China: 1 (1 point for C.A.S. Iberia/Paul Chen, even though his points really should go to Taiwan because I heard he's a Taiwanese... and 0 points for Frost)

But of course the USA has the most points.
