Indeed. I have a few knives in Cold Steel's 1055, and I am thoroughly impressed with it. I didn't expect much edge retention, but it is more than adequate for daily tasks and easy to resharpen.
I've done a lot of cutting demos with the new style Shanghai Shadows, and I can verify that the Cold Steel 1055 can be very tough even with a thin hollow grind.
I just received one of the new GI Tantos, and I have to agree that the sheath is one of the best parts of the package. The knife has a decent balance, and is easy to use for everyday cutting tasks. I was surprised that the swedge is more like a thick Scandi grind than the typical false edge found on this kind of knife. The swedge cuts about as well as a hatchet, and could be used for breaking bones to get at the marrow, for example. The swedge does significantly reduce the useful length of the knife for batoning, however.
The grip is nice when dry, but can get slick in some conditions. I'm going to try some gauze grip tape(hockey stick grip tape) and see if that helps.
As a "bare essentials" combat Bowie, it does quite well, I think. I can't think of another knife less than $50 I'd recommend over it. If one were equipping an army of ape-men on a tight budget, this would be one of the top choices, I think.
