I noticed that. Not sure how I feel about that, but am waiting to hear the ruling from one of honorable mods.

We just heard it from their boss Brett. I have mixed feelings about it but it will cut a lot of clutter from the Traditional forum.

"Restricted to Gold or higher members for replies"

Does this mean only paying members will be able to do giveaways?

Yeah because even if a non-paying member can start a thread, how can he reply to close it and notify all who won?

I'll just give away knives elsewhere on the net.

Oh well, it was good while it lasted.

No offense, but all forums are is clutter, that's the fun of it, just idle talk about a hobby of common interest. how many rules do you need about chatting about the micro details of different knives or posting pictures of your favorite knife next to a bottle of beer ?

Don't get me wrong love the forum and your site to manage, but hey, I deal with corporate nonsense, over layered processes and these types of guys at work :) here want to relax.

Is this the end of the giveaways in Traditional?! :( :( :( I really hope not, they are one of the things that make The Porch special.

I suppose you could edit the original post and title. Seems a bit awkward, but doable.

Maybe it's time for GEC to request, open, and maintain their own Manufacturer's Forum. They get plenty of use out of us without doing anything for us. Their magazine covers get posted here regularly. That's not allowed for other manufacturers - Case, Buck, Queen, etc..

If GEC opened their own Manufacturer's Forum, perhaps giveaways could be worked through that forum. It would be a pain in the rear for them but probably doable.

No, it seems as if those of us who are simply Registered Users won't be welcome to participate in GAWs. I'll just give away knives elsewhere.
Looks like Basic Members can't join in as well. The subheading says replies are restricted to Gold or higher.

I and I'm sure more than few others have gifted knives around these parts through PM's, e-mails, and even visitor messages ;)

The GAW's really are kind of special around these parts, like the one with the Powderhorn/ Toothpick that was supposed to be re-gifted on a yearly basis...some knives have passed through several hands of members here through GAW's. Spark did say that Subforum GAW's could be left in there respective forums for MFG's, perhaps we could plead for "special dispensation" ? I'm wondering about Gary and Franks thoughts on the matter...

What about non-GEC. Traditionals are much more than just GEC. Much more. I've only ever given away one GEC. It was the only one I ever owned. I'll never buy another.

I'm really surprised, and a little disappointed that they haven't done so yet Ed. They sure do get a lot of traffic from this site, as do some of the dealers that carry their knives.

I don't think we should ask for "special dispensation". I think, as I said above and you touched on below in answer to my post, it's about time GEC opened their own Manufacturer's Forum.

Just imo opinion I would rather there not be a GEC subforum. What if we just had a GAW thread as a sticky in yellow within the traditional section?

Going to close this thread. I noticed the new forum when I logged on today, but know nothing about it. Gary and I will obtain more information, then disseminate it.

Update: Have not heard from Spark (owner of BladeForums). However, Gary and I have been talking to the Super Mods in the moderator's forum. Their opinion was that Traditional kind of operates under a modified set of operating rules, anyway. They said that if Gary and I are OK with running Give Aways in Traditional, we should go ahead and do that until Spark specifically says otherwise.

Gary and I are OK with running Giveaways here using the same rules that have been working for us up to now. Which is, "The Giver sets the rules for who can enter." If the giver does not care if the entrant has a paid membership, then neither do we.

Edited to add:
Spark officially has now officially given us permission to continue operating as we have been.
