I just came back from the local Walmart and saw that they've got some new sharp goodies in stock. Surprisingly, they now carry the SOG PowerLock for $56.76 so I had to bring one home with me. :D

Anyhow, they're carrying 2 new assisted openers: Kershaw Leek (serrated) and the Buck Rush in 420HC (grey colored handle). A few new Schrade folders which failed to impress and a new Gerber fixed blade called the Profile as well as the larger Gerber Paraframe II in plain and serrated edges.

Awsome news, thanks for sharing that with us. Will have to go check and see if my Super Walmart has the PowerLock instock. No one seems to carry SOG multitools around here. If Wally world does, I can try before I buy. :D

I haven't been to Walmart in a while. Do they carry a plain-edge Vapor II as part of their standard lineup? Or still only the combo-edge?

Currently WalMart are closing out on some knives - one of the most notable is the Victorinox Champion Plus model - which can be thought of as the SwissChamp withOUT pliers or the old discontinued Champion with the addition of Pen, Pin in handles as well as the extra tools on the back like that hook thing-y........

WalMart used to sell that at about $35 - which was a fair price - but at closeout it is now $20 - which is a bargain.
(some individual stores have cut that price even further, I have heard of one person getting it for as low as $15 out in Calif.)

I saw the paraframe a few days ago at wallyworld and was all set to buy it... It was nice, although the steel was a bit thin and cheap. It did have a very nice lock-up and a slim profile... a good deal at about 25 bucks... However, at the last moment, I saw that it was made in China. It was the best piece of Chinese cutlery I saw, but due to political reasons. I had to decline to purchase.

Am I the only one who's never seen SAKs at their local Wal Mart? Am I not looking in the right place? I've been all through sporting goods and around that display case with the pictures of the knives they keep behind the counter, but I've never seen anything made by Victorinox or Wenger around here.

I've never seen any Wenger SAKs in WallyWorld.

I have been told that individual stores may not carry the same lines - but seeing the knives display picture card that fills a regular display case (and not the actual knives) - in the Sporting goods dept. made me think the lines were fairly "standardized" -
and I always thought Victorinox models like the Classic and Tinker were very popular models, so would be common to all WalMarts.......

No. the Vapor II is ony available in a combo edge at Wamart. :(

I was tempted to buy a Gerber Paraframe II in plain edge, but the Kershaw Vapors seem to have better fit & finish for the money.

Walmart also carries the the new Schrade Cable lock folder and the Schrade XTAC model SQ586. The Cable Lock seems like a cool concept especially for a $20 buck folder, but I was disappointed with it's sloppy assembly. The XTAC was a bit better but on the sample I checked out, the linerlock engaged across the tang and touched the opposite liner.

This got discussed on the Schrade forum a couple of days ago. Steve, the Schrade web guy, has some interesting comments about build quality on this knife, and the state of things in Ellenville in general. Must reading for anybody interested in Schrades.

Thanks for the link. I guess I'll wait to see the "refined" version of the Cable Lock before I give it a go. ;)

You're quite welcome, Cosmic. Looks like we'll either see better versions of the Cable Lock or none at all .... Here's hoping they get things straightened out in Ellenville.
