Hi all,
Just received the new Gransfors Bruk small splitting axe I bought for my father.
There is a crack on the handle so I want to know if I should return it.

If I return it I will probably not receive the new one before his birthday.

Thanks in advance for the help

Looks like checking. Personally I'd say return it on the basis of cost and whatnot, but functionally it's probably not going to be an issue. I have a few homemade handles with checking and I filled 'em in with some epoxy and they've held up fine.

May also be what is sometimes referred to as wind shake. But when here is no streaking in the wood colors as yours is it could be from other causes such as the felling of the tree. No real way to predict if it will be a problem but it is flawed. I would return it. I bet your father will be OK with waiting a little while. It's a very nice gift.

For what you pay for these I'd send it back in a heartbeat. As to whether it would actually come apart or otherwise endanger your dad; I don't think so. Contact the company, show them photos and get a commitment (it's guaranteed for a long time isn't it?) as to free replacement, or not, and then wrap it to present on your dad's birthday. That's the precise point in time that both of you ought to 'discover' the defect and then collectively decide what to do next.

You bought a boutique axe, I'd expect nothing but the best fit and finish for the price. I'd send it back.

Thank you everyone for the feedbacks.
It's already in the mail. The company gave me a slip so I didn't have to pay for the shipping.
