New Greco Falcon...

KWM,

It can best be described here:

www.cqcknives.com

Look under "Greco Folders".

This is the new Greco Falcon, blade steel and scales are both 8670 steel. It is a frame lock. Leather thong is mine :)

At the sale price I couldn't say "NO" heheh.

The knife is accurately described as "STIFF"! They say it smooths out, I'll have to wait and see, mine is only 2 days old. Frame lock is really tight. Almost takes two hands to close it. Probably not for everyone, but as I said I could not say no.

It has that nice utilitarian look to it. And you're right about the price; tough to beat!

Scariest thing is that two of the pics are called "Kid's Park." Yikes!

Sorry 'bout that "Kids Park" thing....

I edited the album :D

Kids\park\camera\knife......go figure.... :)

I got one of these at the Blade Show last week also! This knife is a beast! A full 3/16 thick and i would say about a 3 inch or a little longer blade. Mine is also very tight but is getting a little easier to open and close. The lock up is the best I have ever used, there is absolutely NO blade play from side to side even when torking hard on the blade!

The only complant I have is the blade is a little off center when it is closed and it has no pocket clip.

Mongrel, is your Falcon's blade a little off center when it is closed?

I thought "Kid's Park" was hilarious. South Central Kid's Park.

I'm not sure about this, but the blade's probably off-center when it's closed because of that mean-ass lock. I have a liner lock that does that if I don't tighten the pivot screw enough after I reassemble it.

That could be. I looked at about 5 of them on Johns table at the Blade Show and they all were doing this. The blade rubs on the liner and it weared off the blade finish and the handel powder coat on the inside of the liner. I guess that dosen't matter though on a folder that is ment for heavy work!

Actually I noticed it as soon as I took it out of the bag. I purchased mine from cqcknives.com. I took it out and saw how it looked 'warped' to the left if you are looking down on the edge with the tip pointed forward.

I, too, thought it might be the lock putting pressure on it, so I took it apart. I love the fact that John Greco EXPECTS you to take it apart (note: make sure you have some medium loc-tite on hand to reasemble!). Anyway, I put a small stright edge along both sides of the bare blade. There is a distinctive 'bend' in the blade from about the point of the makers stamp out toward the tip. My guess as to how it happend:

1. It is an intentional-tactical bend (yea I know it's a stretch :D)

2. It may have been caused when the makers mark was punched into the blade. It could have been with enough force to cause that type of bend.

I did contact David Bata of CQC Knives to thank him for his service etc. and I mentioned it to him. He said his is the same way. Reading the above just confirms this is a trait of this particular knife. Not a problem as far as I can tell in using it though.

This is also one knife I would never worry about opening up in the pocket! It is one tight sucker-tight in a good way though. Frame lock is like iron.

I really like this knife. Reminds me of what a Spartan would carry if he needed a folder!

The scales are crying out for some custom tlc too!

That is good to know! I thought it looked like maybe it was grinded that way like more "meat" was left on the left side of the blade. I got to look at John's Falcon that he has used a bunch and it was the only one I saw that was centered but I didn't see if his blade was stamped. This doesn't hurt the knife at all so I'm not worried about it.;)

I bet this folder will start to get noticed and become very popular with folks who use there knives hard! I think this very well might be the most solid folder on the market! I have a Strider GB and I have to say it locks up a bit more solid with much less blade play...this thing is ugly and just GREAT!!!:D

Mongrel, How did you take apart your knife? Did you have to punch out the screws/hex heads? When I try to adjust the pivit pin it just turns with the wrench.

SkigSkag40,

I had to use a 1/4" open end wrench. I could just barely grab the sides of the SS insert hex head. It was enough for me to break the pivot screw loose.

Yes you do have to 'knock' the inserts out. I centered the insert over a piece of CPV plastic pipe (on end) so that the insert was over the hole. I took a properly sized drift-punch and LIGHTLY tapped on it till it came free from the handle piece. Of course I cross threaded on of the inserts (the one near the pivot point)and so I had to break into my 'emergency' kit! Never was $6.00 spent so well-heheh.

I cleaned it up, added some teflon based lube I had around (yea I know I have to get some Mil-Tec :D) and reassembled it. I only used a wee bit 'o loc-tite on the one insert next to the pivot pin. I found the overall function of this knife is alot better if that particular pin is looser (almost too loose) than the others. I kept my pivot pin tight so that it will wear in quicker. I sit around and just keep working it. It is feeling better everyday.

It's funny how you said 'ugly'-I mean is this a knife only a mother could love or what? The more I handle\look at it the more I like it though. It's kinda like what one of us would build done in our basements-except for the beautiful blade design. As you said this aint no 'GENTLEMANS TACTICAL'.

I almost hesitated to use it, and then I thought whoever this John Greco is (I've never had the pleasure to meet him)he'd probably look at me and say "You big wuss, I made that sucker to cut! Now get it out of your pocket and get on with it!!!" To hell with 'collector value', I'm gonna use it....

Good luck with yours...let me know how you made out,

Mongrel

PS-What do you say we form THE OFFICIAL JOHN GRECO FALCON FOLDER USERS CLUB? We could be charter members :D (something I've never been before)

I like that idea about the Falcon folder club!!!:D I don't know much about the steel in this knife (8670) but is seems to be very tough. I wonder how felxable it is? I was thinking of maybe trying to straten the blade in a vice? What do you think, should I see if i can flex it back?

John is a cool fello! I would guess he is in his 50's and seems like an all American guy! He took time to talk to me at the Blade Show and was very nice!:)

I think I'm going to buy another Falcon befor the price goes back up to normal. At $50.00 this is a true bargan! Heak at 3 times that it is still a bargan!:D

Got mine about a week ago....still at stiff as the day it was delivered...lol

Mine also has the typical "bend" to it in the blade from the stamp area to the tip.

One hell of a heavy duty folder, for $50 beans off of CQC how could I go wrong :D :D :D

I bought one of the Falcon's also, but I ended up sending mine back, as it did not suit me,for various reasons.

I think a bit more relief on the right hand scale would make a world of difference, for making releasing the frame lock easier.
It's very hard to release with the right hand, and impossible, for me, to release with the left hand.
I usually prefer 'right handed liner/frame locks', but this one was just too much. Like I said, more relief would do the trick.

Get rid of those damnable hex head screws. They make it extremely irritating to try and take the thing apart.

And last, make the scales a bit thicker, or slap some G-10 on 'em.

At $50-$75 though, it's a great knife. I really like John Greco's knives for the most part.

Mikemck, John makes a kit for the handle. It is 2 slabs (I'm not sure what material they are made of) that bolt on to make a thicker handle.

I bought a Raptor at the Blade Show. That's the hawksbill. After a few days of playing with the blade, it's loosened up enought that I can actually open it with the thumb stud.

But that framelock is a monster. the locking bar travels all the way over to the other side. Not only two hands, but sometimes I have to use my Micra as a prybar. The locking bar should stick up a little more. What do you say we form THE OFFICIAL JOHN GRECO FALCON FOLDER USERS CLUB? We could use a swollen thumb as our logo :D

I haven't had a problem with the blade rubbing a liner, but I wish I could disassemble the knife. This really is the number one hard use folder anywhere, and I'm sure it will ease up with time.

That's good Esav!:D I like the swollen thumb idea.

"With a thumb like that, he MUST BE A GRECO MAN!"

Probably never have to pull our knives out-one look at that thumb and stand back baby

Seriously, John Greco makes a killer (no pun intended)product, he desearves a fan club imo...

Thanks for the laugh man-

Mongrel

Mongrel,
Give me a few days and I'd love to join your club. I just ordered mine..I'm expecting a swollen thumb by Sat!
Matt

Yes, By all means start the Greco Club. Count me in also. I just received my Falcon folder and MST Mk IV.
My Falcon is getting easier to open and close and I have not yet applied any Militec1 to the pivot. This is the toughest folder I own or, I should think, ever will own. I can't imagine breaking this thing short of gross, intentional damage. Something like hitting it with a LAW rocket at 100 yards.:D
If anyone is into customizing knives then this is the knife for you! At $50 apiece you probably could do some extensive modifications and still sell them easily for $250 each. Hmmm, burgundy micarta scales with file-worked back spacer?
