Hi Guys,
I just received a brand new Dayton HD 1725 RPM 1/2 HP motor and I intend to make my first grinder with it. I have access to step pulleys and was wondering what you folks might recommend? Keep in mind I am making my first knife entirely by hand w/files and sand paper so even though this is not a 1.5 HP motor, it's better than worn out arm muscles! Would I be better served going ahead and making a 2x72 or because of the HP stick to a smaller endeavor? 2x48? Thanks all! Don

I'd lean towards making a 9" disc grinder if it's a reversible motor. You'd have to use light pressure, but I know one maker who used a disc only for 15-20 years before he built a 2"x72".

I would build the 2x 72" , and just upgrade the motor at a later stage. Sure, you're going to bog it down relatively easily, but as you said - better than worn-out arm muscles. For the same effort, it makes more sense to just build something that wil serve you better in the long run. My 2c...

Not to add confusion, but you may want to check Craigslist. There is a used 1 HP in Smock, PA pretty cheap.

Well, seeing that the 220V amperage is listed at 8.9...which is half of 17.8....I think the 17.8 is correct.

I agree with the others though....I'd build the 2x72 and when money allows, upgrade the motor.

I am going from an array of files, angle grinders, sanding blocks and a 1x30 to a 2x72 also. So I guess that says that I agree.
