For years I have carried a slip joint knife of some kind, mostly a Casexx Trapper or a Victorinox Tinker. I was recently given a Benchmade 810 Contego and really appreciated the quality of this knife. However I had three problems with it.

Its a HUGE folder, considerably larger than I am used to.

The one I was given was a combo edge, which I am not a fan of. I was actually very disappointed when I saw the combo edge, which made me feel bad. Maybe I overreacted about that aspect of it, it appears a large number of them come that way from the factory so obviously a large percentage of buyers either seek out the combo edge or don't care enough to influence their decision.

The rough texture was a turn off for me. It actually does not feel bad in my hand, but in just a couple of weeks has already chewed up my pocket.

I began looking around and decided a plain edge Griptillian was the knife for me. I picked one up today and really like it so far. I actually came across this forum while browsing Benchmade models online. I have another forum I have been talking on for years (gun/outdoors) that has somewhat died in the last couple of years, so I registered here and am looking forwards to posting and browsing on Bladeforums.

I almost feel guilty about not carrying the Contego, as it was a very generous gift, but I did keep it. Hopefully I made a good choice. I am not a good photographer, but you get the idea.

The Grip is a great general purpose folder for EDC, or just use around the house. I just used mine to open up the box of a new dishwasher I installed today. I also often use it a back up to my fixed blade when hiking, backpacking/camping. They are a sturdy, no nonsense knife. I also like the Spyderco Manix II for something in this price range.

The griptilian is a great knife. I have the Contego and it was too rough so I lightly sanded the rough edges, still big though. lol

When I picked up the Griptiallian I examined 3 examples to check the edge profile. I picked the best one, but it was still quite uneven, coarse, and not very sharp. I spent some time this morning with a fine diamond stone and cleaned it up. It went slow using the fine grit, but I wanted to be careful so I just spent the extra time. I had to really spend some time on one side. I estimate one bevel was at 15 the the other at 25. Once I got the bevels even I sharpened to a bur on both sides and then went to the arkanasas stone followed by some stropping. It is now quite sharp and shaves the hair off my arm no problem.

Compared to the Contego the Griptillian's edge from the factory was pitiful. The Contego had one of the nicest factory edges I have ever come across. I went for an included angle of 50deg, pretty steep but being a daily carry knife I care more about a tough edge than having a scalpel. It cuts pretty good and hopefully will stay sharp.

If you like the looks of the Contego look into the 550 Griptilian. That's one of my favorite blade styles.

And welcome to Blade Forums.
