New grizzly grinder

I am new to knife making and purchased the new grizzly 2+42 and the platten is too wide to do plunge grinds . Was wanting to modify by adding a piece of flat iron.my question is can I get by with out the low friction tape that is on there and if not dose any one know where I can get some?

Yes and has a radius on one side so narrowing won’t work.
