I just received my first Guntings. I got both a live knife and a drone.
The first test of a self defense knife is craftsmanship and quality of manufacture. The Gunting is as good as a production knife gets. I have never owned another Spyderco, Microtech, Benchmade, Camillus, Emerson, MOD or other knife that is better made than the Gunting. The blade opens smoothly, locks positively without any blade play horizontally or vertically. IMHO Spyderco does G-10 better than anyone else providing a good looking non slip surface.
The second test is utility. An SD knife that can be used for everyday cutting tasks is more likely to be carried when there is only room for one knife. I used my Gunting to open envelopes, cut fruit and vegetables, even a little whittling. It works great. Not a surprise since the Jot Singh Khalsa I had was a similar configuration and was surprisingly useful.
I have been practicing martial arts for more than 40 years (maybe I'll be good some day) and can see the Gunting has a variety of uses for self defense.
I'm looking forward to learning more.
