Hello all! Didn’t see a new member section after registering so I figured I’d jump in with both feet. I have a fair amount of knives and Buck’s are well represented.

I inherited most that are pictured from a well loved family member that passed a while ago.

The busted tip 503 I bought when I was in high school in 1985. Via Smoky Mountain Knifeworks. Back when their catalog was like a newspaper. I field dressed my first buck with that blade.

For years I was reluctant to send it in for a blade replacement. Not exactly sure why. It’s been close to 30 years since I broke the tip. Maybe thinking the soul of the knife would be gone or something. It sits unused and that’s just dumb. I’ll send it in soon.

I found this site while researching a 124. I’ve since determined that for the price I’d have to pay and its use or lack thereof I might as well get something practical. ;) So being a bit bored on a long weekend post Christmas I snagged a mint with box 655 on ebay today.IMG_4148.jpeg

Thanks all.

I’m older than the average fella to have two pre teen kiddos. I don’t get to hunt much anymore. But as a family we do a lot of camping. Me being a knife nut I’ve always got a knife handy. I tend to over do things on purpose to amuse my kids. So a 124 for whittlin’ marshmallow roasting sticks is right up my alley. Then there’s the practical side of me that occasionally wins out like buying the 655 instead.

A 903 woulda been a great fit for my absurdness as well. But I’ve got the Bowie knife covered with a Bear and Son on the way. That purchase was to get a rise out of Mrs. Finn. You see, I cut myself 20 years ago when we were dating (to the bone) and she refuses to let it go. She never misses an opportunity to give me a ribbing whenever I’ve got a blade in hand. I can’t wait to see the look on her face when I saunter up to the campfire with a Bowie on my belt.

Cheers all

If you are willing, you could get someone to grind the 503’s blade to a new point, to keep the history of the original blade.
