New guy and possible "dead horse"...

I just wanted to finally say hello...I've been lurking for awhile doing some research on a possible "dead horse topic" that I'm sure that a lot of veteran members are tired of reading.

I really wanted my first thread to be a "Look what I got today" type of thing but to be honest I'm still trying to decide between 4 knives (the BK-9, BK-7, RD-9 and RD-7).

I have used the search option and read probably every thread that had any/all of the above mentioned in it.

The threads that I have read have taught me a lot in the past week...thank you to all involved, but has left me a little more indecisive too. I look forward to learning more and hopefully making a decision soon and getting one in my hands and posting some pics in the process.

I am open to any suggestions that anyone may have....for now...it's back to the search option.

Welcome and as for the knives it depends on what your going to use it for. They all their uses!

All are very useful knives however I greatly prefer the company and politics of Becker over Ontario, unless of course you're talking about an original Justin Ranger, than I would most definately go for one of the Ranger. Do a little searching on Ranger customs, I think you will be pleasantly surprised to learn what you can pick up one of these super tough customs for.

I own about 7 Ranger Knives, all made by Justin. Dont own any Beker Kabars. I love Ranger Knives and like supporting Justin, but as far as differences in use goes, I think they would be pretty similar. I have not really heard of any quality control issues with the ontario rangers. The reviews I have read have been good and Justin stays on top of them to make sure they are making the blades to his standards.

As far as size goes, if you are considering a 7 inch or 9 inch blade, I would go with the 9 inch. It gives you more chopping power and longer blade for easier battoning. You would only be adding 2 inches to the blade, and in a knife that large, I dont think its too big of a deal to go larger. In my opinion, the trade off is better with a 9", compared to a 7".

Good luck picking your blade. I highly doubt you will be dissapointed with either. If it were me, I would keep my eye open on the exchange for something made by Justin. if not, its a toss up, but I do love Ranger Knives

Welcome to the forums, cisco!

Politics aside, you really can't go wrong with any of the knives you indicated. Personally, I would go with a Ranger, because I like the grind a bit better and micarta handles are nice.

Thank you for the replies and thoughts...it does help a lot.

I do agree that 2 inches isn't really a big difference as far as carrying, and agree that the trade off for possible chopping and battoning is well worth it!!

I will definitely keep my eyes open for one of the original Justin Rangers, at this time I was looking at the Ontario versions.

Both the Beckers and the Ontarios seem to be extremely good for the money from every review or video that I have seen so far (I need to keep an eye on the budget at the moment).

After a lot or searching ( I think that I wore the search feature out...lol), I've decided on the Ranger RD's...I am still however debating on the 7 or 9 but seriously leaning to the 9 like I said earlier.

I spoke with Justin....great to talk to!!!

I also wanted to thank everyone for the replies and input!!!

I won't be ordering for a week or two...I'm sure that I'll still be thinking it over, but when I finally get whichever one, I'll be sure to get some "in use" pics.
