New Guy & First Busse, need advice

I'm getting ready to jump on a Busse. Im trying to decide between the Meaner Street, and The Leaner meaner Street. It will be my EDC knife for defensive purposes, but will also be used for various small chores around my house and summer camp. I also would like to carry it in an IWB kydex sheath.

I understand the Leaner is slightly thinner, (.150 to be exact). Do you think this would be ideal for my intended use? Or should I get the thicker Meaner Street? What is the DC?

Also I understand this will come with NO sheath??? Any advice for a kydex one which will allow IWB carry?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Brian

Well, the actual angle of the primary grind is the same(or very close to it) on both. The leaner is significantly lighter, but since the grind isn't actually thinner the improvement in slicing performance is marginal, it would make a difference in firm binding material though, like heavy duty cardboard. Other than that I think the Meaner will perform just as well as the leaner, with the added benefit of more strength, not that it's really needed in a knife that small.

I hope your not talking about Jerry! He's got a hurt shoulder you know. :D

I bought the Leaner Meaner and It's very nice. I think you'll be happy with either.

DC stands for Double-Cut. It's a blade finish that Busse uses. It's my favorite finish and from what I've heard is very tough. If I understand correctly, They give the knife a satin finish and them Bead Blast it. I think that's right.

My Meaner Street compared to some other Busse blades. I went with the thicker blade. I'm just that kinda guy :p

go with the fatty. feels really good with a saber grip. plus is has that weight so you really know you are packing something.

i carry iwb with okuden kydex which allows for a full grip on the handle for an extremely quick and secure draw

Congrats on making the jump. I like the idea of a fatty as well. For a little more weight you certainly get a field worthy tool should you decide to use it for other than simple cutting chores (4 wheelin can be tough on the equipment). I must admit though the budget has not allowed me to pick up a leaner version yet so this is from somewhat of a biased point of view.

I think this man is onto something.

Thanks for all the great feedback, unfortunately, I'm no less confused than I was before I posted. Strangely, I think I "NEED" both. And now after spending the day on the Busse website and Blade Forums while I should have been working, I'm starting to have crazy thoughts like selling a kidney or something. Is this some sort of a cult I'm getting involved in here?

I'm not that kinda guy, but if I was..... I couldn't think of a better time :)

I also have another decision. Do I get the Special edition of either knife with the limited tiger stripe micarta and satin blade, OR a non special edition version with the DC blade and green micarta????

I would get the non-se(edit: ermm, limited/special edition, it's all the same :foot: ). It costs less, isn't limited, and IMO the tigerstripe doesn't look as good on the EDC handle pattern as the standard/snakeskin micarta looks. This way you get a less expensive knife that you won't be afraid to use because it's an L.E., that depending on your tastes looks better. Oh, and doublecut is my favorite finish ever, so it gets marks there too

DC all the way. Drove my first meaner into a butcher block that's mounted on top of my tool box. It smoothed out the black crinkle finish, not much else was done by this. I've seen people knock off the black crinkle finish with much harder abuse. I just got my DC meaner and did the same thing to it, drove it in hard and deep ( ok now, no wisecracks!). When I pulled it out nothing had happen to the finish. I mean not even a scuff mark! Can't wait to put it through some more abuse to see how it holds up. Thinking when the time comes and the black crinkle on my other meaner has been knocked off enough I'll attempt a bead blast of my own.

DC Rocks!

BTW I have the Meaner version... nothing lean about it. As they say in the gym...GO BIG OR GO HOME! :D

As far as finish goes, I would try to get either the satin or DC. I just like it a lot better than a coating.

As far as thickness goes, the leaner will be lighter and probably slice better, and still be plenty strong.

The regular will maybe not slice quite as well, be stronger than you will ever need it to be, and have a heft that strangely satisfies the soul.

For purely functional concerns I would get the leaner.

I have to say, I have never been a fan of coatings, but that dang crinkle coat sure is tough. Even the old coating was tough, but the crinkle coat is tougher and much more abrasion resistant.

The leaner busse's have always been slightly more efficient cutters. And they are still tough. I would go thinner with a Busse than I would with any other brand of knife. Maybe that is why his std large blades are not really a 1/4 inch any more. They are more like 0.22 inch. I don't mind as they still are nearly unbreakable.

0.22" ? I just got out the ole digital caliper and measured my FSH. I'm getting 0.2490" to 0.2575". the largest reading was taken at the rear of the knife behind the handle. I'm sure the crinckle coating is going to affect the thickness but can't imagine it being so thick that the orginal thickness before coating would be 0.22". Am I missing something here? The company store is stating 0.25".
