New guy gets mildly bitten with knife buying disease

Recently, I've been going on a binge buying gadgets

Due to my desire for high quality sound, I invested in a high quality playback system consisting of an iPod, a $200 portable headphone amp, and $200 Etymotic ER4S in-ear monitors. To carry this stuff with me, I invested in a gadget bag (or man-purse as my wife calls it) that I usually have with me whenever I head out.

I've always been a flashlight collector, so I invested in a pocket rocket light in a Surefire L4 after wondering what the fuss was about (my idea of a high end flashlight before joining candlepowerforums was a Mag 2D)

Then I thought I needed a knife. I've always loved Swiss Army knives and have had many, but my current ones are kind of beat up so I thought my new gadget bag deserved something new, but then I thought a single blade folder would be a cool to have for a change. I bought a Kershaw Leek combo edge because I liked its sleekness and opening system. But then I thought I'd like something on my keychain in case I wasn't out with my gadget bag, so I bought a Spyderco Ladybug. I also bought a Sharpmaker to keep the things sharp.

Today, Lebaron had their annual no-tax sale, so I went to pick up a few things. I still want some micro tools in my bag, so I picked up a Victorinox Mini Champ, saw a Byrd Finch which looked great for $16 (will give the ladybug to wife), and also picked up a new Spyderco Viele II because I wanted one *good* knife...my attempt at buying a "high end" knife (well not high end, but for me this is a big jump considering I don't really *need* to carry a folding knife for any real practical reason, I don't even go camping). I liked the Viele because it's classy looking and has a simple shape that doesn't look threatening. It felt quality and didn't look like a tactical weapon out of a Steven Seagal movie.

I think that's all the knives I need to buy for now, I've already bought way more than I need (the only thing I truly need is the Mini-Champ), the rest were bought just because...well, I think they are cool. I can't help to think that I spent way too much money on these gadgets, but certainly the "hunt" in finding these gadgets was fun.

So that's my knife story.

Welcome wd!

Remember, thers a diference between "need" and "want". No one needs an IPod, right? Its a want. ;)

That is a perfectly acceptable reason here. :D

You sound sort of like me. I bought an iPod a headphone amp and a pair of Grado Labs SR-60 headphones. Then a Surefire E2E flashlight. The only difference is I like BMs while you seem to be drawn towards Spydercos. :D

....gotta differ. An IPod is a definite NEED.:p

I went the same route: LED flashlights --> locking knives. My only advice is to go slow or else you're gonna end up with a drawer full of knives and not know which one to carry on a daily basis. I started off with short blades and worked my way up; now I mostly carry a 4-incher Cold Steel Voyager.

They're also fun to play with, though many wives don't understand the fascination. Every time there's a story on the news about someone attacking someone else with a knife, I have to put mine away for a few days!

I hope you are kidding. That is absurd.

Ditto. When someone gets attacked locally, thats all the more reason to carry yours. Even better, a firearm when, where and if you can.

I seemed to converge on the Spyderco models more than any other brand, but I liked the Kershaw models too. I did want to try a Benchmade but they are hard to find around here, and are expensive whereas, the LeBaron store has great prices on the Sypdercos and Kershaws.

I guess like a lot of people around here, the reason to buy and carry a knife is just an appreciation of buying a quality item that happens to satisfy a basic need (survival). For me, I really could have gotten away with just the Ladybug, but the Viele I bought just feels like a high end knife and I just like just fondling it and really don't expect to really utilize it heavily.

Just try and stay away from the blade shows....I just blew through $800 today lol but it was soooooo worth it. Welcome to knife forums.

Now.... we gotta start working on some fixed blades. May I suggest something like a Dozier straight personal or Arkansas Traveler as an alternative to a folder EDC. www.dozierknives.com Bark River also has many fine small fixed blades to fit a similar role. My personal favorite is the Mini Canadian. Then, we need to get a medium sized FB... my personal faves here are the Dozier Model-6 and the Bark River Sandstorm-A. Then, we must consider a larger fixed blade... Camillus OVB bowies are mighty fine, the BK&T BK-7 and BK-9 are pretty good, the BK-5 is better if you can find one. I'm sure others will chime in with more choices.:D

See what ya started?
