Hi,

After years of owning cheap, mediocre knives (my EDC was a smith and wesson folder), I decided to expand my horizons.

With the help of some christmas money, I now have in my possession the following items:

BK-2
Eskabar
K-bar cutlass machete

The BK-2 and Eskabar came in the mail today. This BK-2 is bad arsed. Never owned a knife that thick. I used it to split kindling to get things going in my wood stove this evening, it was an pleasant 50 something degree day here in the mountains of southwest Virginia, so no need to keep the fire going all day.

Of all three the machete arrived in the sharpest state, I basically just waved it at the hair on my leg and it popped right off.

As far as every day use, I could see myself using the Eskabar more often, just need how to figure the best way to attach that thing to my body, things dangling from my neck would get in the way in my line of work (farming/carpentry).

Speaking of farming, would this 1095 steel make for a good farm use blade? I could see that Eskabar being pretty handy, but could it take a dip into some rocky soil and come out OK?

On protecting the steel - what do you guys think about using pig fat? Also, what about beeswax?

Thanks and take care.

If you don't want to buy anything, just use some cord in the holes on the sheath and lash it onto your belt. You can do vertical or horizontal carry.

1095 is a good jack-of-all-trades steel, and it's one of my favorites. Certainly it would be good for use around the farm. I have a circa 1989 Camillus "USMC Kabar-clone" with a 1095 blade that's been through just about everything for over 20 years. KaBar's version of 1095 with CroVan and their excellent heat treat can take and hold a much finer edge.

The blades are coated so no need to worry about corrosion, and I bet the edge will get enough use to not worry about the minimal surface rust. 1095 is a good tough steel. Takes a beating but isn't impossible to sharpen or too hard that it chips easily. I carry my bk14 in my left arse pocket, not in the way and ready when I need it. nice choices btw. Now get a bk5 and you can take down the field of corn in one swipe :D

Edit to add. Beeswax will be good to protect the edge. Really any oil will do at all. Pig fat may be a bit too biodegradable and develop an odor.

Mineral oil will also protect the edge from rust and it's food safe. I just slip the necker sheath down my shirt and it stays out of the way. All you dudes have more pockets to work with though.

Hey there - welcome! If you don't want to carry the BK14 on your neck, then I second the notion of using paracord to make belt loops for it - costs little / works great! Another alternative I'm really enjoying is this pocket sheath my daughter got me for Christmas...

It's comfortable and super handy.

Sounds to me like you got a pretty useful trio there. Hope you get tons of use and enjoyment out of them!

Wow, thanks, quite impressed with the replies. I think I'll be spending some time on this forum, I'm already looking back at all the older posts, trying to glean info. Thanks again.

Yes that's how it begins, gleaning info. Then that info convinces you that you need a BK-7, and a 9, then an 14, then......well you get the idea. ;)

Let me know if you want a pocket sheath like posted above.

Hey getridone, welcome to the forum and congrats on the knives! A lot of cool folks with a lot of knowledge in here. Now go beat them knives up!

Also, we love pics!

Hello and welcome to our corner of the earth!

I'm a big fan of the TDI clip from above for solo carry of the Bk's 11&14, and they work well just in a front pocket for me as well. But IF you want to combine the 2&14, DerekH had a good idea a while back that you might want to consider:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/832701-My-BK2-and-BK14-or-as-I-like-to-call-em-Winona-and-Jefe.

To my understanding, the Bk-14(eskabar) sheath attaches to the holes in the BK2's sheath with "chicago screws" that can be found at your local home improvement warehouse.

Just some food for thought, hope you enjoy your stay here!

I wondered if that sheath fit an 11...now I know and must have one...

Welcome , great purchases.

Started out as a neck knife and it felt weird, always getting in the way.

Then I tried this using a tekloc.

Just to bulky.

So now I put it in a side pocket of my pants, or wear it around my neck.

Trial and error.Good luck.
