Hi all,

I just joined the forum and wanted to know if this forum is mainly for fixed blade knives or any type of knives? I am a furniture maker and as far as I am concerned, my pocket knife is a tool just like all the rest of my tools. I recently purchased a couple of Schatt Morgan knives ( Warncliff whittler, sow belly ). I am curious how folks here sharpen their knives. I am confident sharpening chisels, plane blades and the like, however; when it comes to knives, I am sadly lacking skills. I really want to get a good working edge on these knives and would like some recommendations as to edge angle, sharpening media, etc. Appreciate any and all help.

Mike

Welcome to bladeforums, this forum has all kinds of information concerning folders, fixed blades, and sharpening methods. One of the easiest to use sharpeners I have discovered has been the spyderco sharpmaker. I'll edit in a link to knife maintenance where you can learn A LOT about sharpening.

Welcome to Bladeforums! If it's sharp, you'll find it here. There are specific subforums for all sorts of things, so take your time and look around. General Discussion is a great place to start, but you'll find more specific info in the various subforums.

As for your sharpening question, there are a thousand different methods. Many people prefer traditional stones/freehand techniques, but there are options. For knife owners less confident in their sharpening skills, the Spyderco Sharpmaker seems to be a popular option, and is often recommended on the forums. Other options include clamp-type systems, such as the Gatco and Lansky systems. Do a google search to find some online knife retailers, they should have lots of options for you to check out. Good luck!

The Razor Sharp Paper Wheels will give you more than adequate sharpness. You need an inexpensive bench grinder. Check out the Maint, Tink, Embellishment forum. If you are a Schatt fan, check out the Traditional Forum. Welcome friend.

I've got a Sharpmaker myself, and it does work well. If you happen to prefer flat stones, you can take the two triangular rods, turn the base over, and put them in the slots. Voila! Flat stone.

Welcome to the forum. If you like knives you will like it here. I also highly recommend the Spyderco Sharpmaker.
