Hello. I am a new guy here and I was thinking on obtaining a basic membership. What I want to know before I waste both my and Blade Forums site is if I am allowed to discuss and show obscure knives not found on your knife company dealers site? (No sales or price checking) Or is this forum only allowed to discuss knives supported by your list of knife companies?

Yes, you are.

Deal spotting is a no-no.
You cannot mention non-supporting dealers by name.
Old and/or obscure knives are talked about all the time, as are new knives not sold (so far as I know) by any of the supporting dealers.
Two examples: Rough Ryder, and not USA made vintage Marbles, over in the traditionals sub forum.
Unpopular brands, such as Strider, are also talked about here in General

The basic membership eliminates the need of a photo hosting site and the related headaches, to post pictures.
That alone is worth the cost, IMHO. :D

Welcome to Bladeforums Mr. Opinionated.

I don't speak for the owner or moderators, but my understanding has always been what Pilsner and 3fifty7 said. You can mention any brand or dealer you want, and post pics of any knife you want, you just can't post a link to a non-paying dealer/vendor/brand site. It's also frowned upon to post an obvious advertisement for a knife or dealer/vendor/maker who isn't a paying supporter. Sometimes people think they are being clever and come here trying to sneak in some free advertising posing as a member, but they get the axe pretty quick.

If people weren't allowed to mention brands and vendors that aren't paid supporters, or post pics of non-paying makers knives, Bladeforums would be a very different place. A lot less popular, and with a lot less content.

I've been here 18+ years and have mentioned dealers/brands/vendors/makers during all that time that aren't paying supporters, and posted pics of non-supporter knives, and never heard a word about it from the mods or had my posts edited.

My understanding is talking about dealers is ok but linking to a non supporting dealer is a no go.

Several sub forums like to keep things “in house” so to speak but general is general.

This was my understanding as well. If a user can’t mention any retailer by name that would be a problem.

I'm interested in clarification here as well actually, because I was always under the impression that you can't even type out the name of a non supporting dealer or vendor...which is why no one ever says they bought a knife on Amazon, it's always "the big river site" and Ebay seems to be worded as some version of "an online auction site" or similar.

Was I under the wrong impression?

Yes. No links, but the sites can be mentioned.

I'd also avoid clone/counterfeit discussion because clones are frowned upon here. Although I don't believe the rule explicitly bans discussion.

I've said "Amazon" countless times on this forum, with never a word from the mods.

I always get a chuckle when I see someone say "the big river site", as if the mods won't know what they're really saying, or like "Amazon" is some kind of satanic incantation "THE NAME THAT SHALL NOT BE SPOKEN!!!".

Whether you say "Amazon", or "the big river site", it's basically like saying "six", or "a half dozen".

I use “Jumbo Creek” and “oBoy” because...well, you know...Valdamert. Don’t tempt the fates.

And to the OP, a membership is totally worth it. That way you don’t see the ads for weird and kinky things that people in your household look at with Gaggle Chrime.

The thing to consider is that this forum represents a wide range of people from all over the world and different age groups. I would ask, what do you imply by saying obscure knives ?
If it's something that belittles, insults or offends the vast cultural differences, then yes, you'd be wasting your time.
Not too long ago a former member tried to justify showing his Nazi knife by calling it a piece of history. That didn't sit well with the owner and he was banned. Also remember that this forum has many members who are women. Showing nude art of women on knives probably won't set well with them as well as most men.

I collect knives that rarely get known about. Mainly African, Tribal, old Mexican, and Islamic blades. And Own a few Hogues as well. As far as a Hitler knife goes or anything with his endorsement. I would throw that shit in the trash can or bury it. Rather than own it. Got no use for Nazi memorabilia.

I started on Blade Forums because Facebook is taking a censorship approach to knives and knife collectors / users. I think I will start a membership to avoid ads lol.
