hello,
i'm sam from kentucky, and i'm new to this amazing forum, piles of awesome stuff here. i'm 24 and while i've always had some kind of traditional folder thanks to my ole dad, i've just recently started to collect and pocket a traditional full time.

My question is concerning a case knife, that i just got and used on a whittling project (my first ball in a cage, still not finished) anyway, it is a yellow medium stockman, and it has a tiny bit of play in a couple of the blades, and i was wondering if this could become an issue or if it is normal to have a small bit of play.

i'm in the process of collecting all the yellow handled case knives i can come across as money allows, and i'm totally hooked.

thanks
sam from kentucky

Welcome! It really depends on what you mean by a "tiny bit of play". If it has play when you force it a little that's probably acceptable, almost normal. If it freely wiggles with any amount of play, that could worsen over time.
You can always tap the bolsters (research the best possible method) to tighten them back up.
If it's very little play, I'd use it and see if you notice it worsening over time before taking action.
If it's obviously bad, I'd do something now.
Good luck.

Sam,

A "tiny bit of play" is not unusual in the least...and while most of us would prefer that there wasn't any play, the fact is that by and large you won't have any issues with the knife and it should serve you well for years to come.

Worst case scenario (no pun intended), you can take advantage of Case's customer service to get the knife repaired if you find that it becomes pronounced or you can't fix the issue yourself.

Welcome to our forum. We hope you'll enjoy your time here.

thanks you guys for the quick responses, i think what i have is normal by what you guys have said, i'm really really enjoying this meduim stockman pattern.

thanks

Welcome Sam.

I hope in time you enjoy our little corner of BFC and it's cast of characters at least as much as I do.

Gus

Welcome Sam... You started out with a good one. The Case yeller stockman, is about as classic as it gets in my mind.

Make sure you post up pics of your whittlin project, when its done

i'll post up some pics of my project when i get it done, it's not a real good lookin one but i'm proud of it so far, i picked up a yellow trapper in cv to go with my soddie and soddie jr. and stockman. i think i may have a slight addiction to the yellow handled cases.

thanks
sam

welcome sam to the forum. i must say that you are serious about knives to tackle the ball in the cage project.--dennis

i have almost finished my ball in a cage, my fingers are sore and my medium stockman needs to honed back to a razor before i finish shaping the ball up, it's not all that pretty but i have several more blocks of wood to try it out on. i think i have found the perfect hobby, as the firearms and motorcycle parts were breaking the bank, and much harder to store.

thanks
sam

Hi,

Welcome! I've started a ball and cage several times but I have yet to actually finish one. So you're far ahead of me.:D

While collecting slip-joints isn't quite as expensive as your other hobbies, I will warn you, these guys are all enablers, me included. Keep a firm grip on your wallet. Wouldn't want to drop it when getting it out to another new slip-joint!:D:D

Welcome to the best forum around Sam. This place is great. Great people, mods, friends, everything. Your doing good with the yellow handled knives. They are a forum favorite, a long thread dedicated to them if I remember correctly.

As for your whittling project...I have been here since 2007 and am still too scared to try that. Good on ya.
