I'm pretty good at sharpening on stones and diamonds so I thought I'd try a belt grinder with the aim of making a little extra income. I have a 1x30 Vevor and bought a used set of calphalon knives on marketplace to practice on. Good thing I did because I'm embarrassing myself with my efforts. Is a kitchen utility knife supposed to look like a tanto?😁 Anyway, I'll eventually get a feel for it.

I have a question that has nothing to do with sharpening. When I was driving truck I used to cut a lot of shrink wrap and I can't think of anything that dulls an edge faster. What would cause that with something as soft as plastic?

Interesting question. What sort of knife were you using? It would be very different if it were some sort of soft stainless steel, vs. something like a Spyderco Rex 121 knife that stands up to cutting abrasive cardboard longer than most anything. IOW: was it really abrading the edge, or just pushing soft steel around with its clingy qualities?

Kizer active bantam, s35vn steel I think. Before that was a $40 Kershaw unknown steel.

UncleBoots, it might've been that the clingy nature pushing the steel around is the issue. Maybe I'm not as good as I thought and was leaving a bit of burr behind to be folded over. The more I learn, the more I realize how little I know.
