Hello,

As this is my first post I would like to start off by saying hello to everyone. I have been a lurker for a while now and figured it was time to sign up. More over I just made my first real knife purchase after months of deliberation and figured I could benefit from the wealth of experience on this forum.

The knife I purchased is a Mcusta MC-1 with a quincewood handle and damascas vg-10 core blade. I really like the looks of this knife (classical styling) and I have heard good things about VG-10.

Eventually I would like to purchase a small sebenza with micarta inlays. This is my grail knife but a little out of my price range at the moment. However, I am graduating from university in April and may just have to pick one up as a present to myself. :)

Anyways my big concern at the moment is I have absolutely no experience in knife care, particularly in regards to sharpening. I really would like to purchase an auto sharpener (i'm not sure if this exists) or something that will allow me to sharpen consistently without risk of personal error. If anyone could suggest a product that could make this possible I would be greatly appreciative.

thanks again and cheers,

Kyle

sharpmaker is my favorite at 60$ it works fast and is easy also gives you a better than factory edge.
lansky 40$
dmt aligner
edge pro apex is the best for systems but it will set you back 200$

Beautiful looking knife, looks like a great way to begin.

When you say auto sharpener are looking for an electric one or just one that gives more guidance than trying to sharpen freehand?

If the later, when I was researching this, I consistently saw positive or rave comments about the Spyderco Sharpmaker. Enough that I finally bought one, but I have not used it yet.

There are a number of highly rated, and generally pretty expensive, electric sharpeners. Have not researched that a lot and not sure how the true knife aficionados feel about powered sharpeners.

I'm always amazed and impressed by those who can get shaving sharp edges freehand, but I'm pretty much a klutz at that sort of thing.

Welcome to the forums! I myself have often lusted after the very knife you started off with - just never been a right time to buy it.

As mentioned above, the Spyderco Sharpmaker comes highly recommended.

As much as SOG seems to be scorned around here, they have a little desktop electric sharpener that works pretty well.

you started off with a bang congrats on coming to forum. i'm nat a sob but feel most knife purchases should be high quality. some utility blades however can be purchased at minimal cost. certainly this is a good direction when starting on a woods knife. however as you become more knowledgeable you will find some knives of high quality at low prices.i'm not a fan of powered sharpeners since a camper & hiker will need to uise sharpeners not powered by electricity. also auto sharpeners are heavier.surely most satisifing experiences for knife buffs come from manual sharpening

Welcome! That's quite a first knife purchase.
I have a Spyderco Sharpmaker that is great but I recently picked a DMT aligner to give it a try. The good thing about the DMT is the consistent sharpening angle. You can get a fairly consistent angle with the sharpmaker. As mentioned above the Edgepro woould be awesome but probably more than you need or care to spend money on. Check out YouTube to see these systems in action. Congrats on graduating!
