Hey guys.

I have been collecting knives (I collect them but I use them all) for years. I have plenty of knives ranging from Benchmade, spyderco, SOG, CRKT, Cold Steel as well as many others. With yesterday being my very first fathers day my wife asked me what I would like for a gift. Now I knew a new Sig Sauer or Glock was out of the question so i opted for my other addiction, a new knife. Years ago I owned a buck and loved it but havent bought one since. I wanted a knife with some good American history behind it that would be a nice companion for many years to come so I decided on a Buck.

We took a trip up to the trading post in Kittery Maine and I ended up buying an Alpha Hunter with Rosewood. This knife is beautiful and well made in my eyes but I was hoping that you pros here could tell me some things about it. I see you all abbreviate on this forum with numbers when describing a specific model and I was hoping you could help me out on that.

I see this knife is 154CM, is that a desireable steel, will it hold up? What else could you tell me? What should I be looking out for and how will I get the longest life out of this knife? Of all my knives I want this to last a lifetime based on the sentimental value alone.

Thanks a million in advance for any help and thanks for reading, this is a great forum you all have here.

Welcome to the forum MacK!

Look at Bucks website www.buckknives.com and you will see the model numbers associated with the knives. At least the ones that are still in production.

Buck just recently is changing from ATS34 which is a trademarked Japanese steel to the equavilante 154CM us steel.

I gather your alpha is the fixed blade. Nice knife! Should easily last a lifetime.

Thanks for the reply PacKrat. The knife is actually a folder. On the site it looks like its a 277. I can already feel the bug setting in here. Been reading this forum for hours now. I have a funny feeling I will be buying a new Buck every week from this point on. Although all my knives are nice quality knives they just don't have the simple beauty and history that a Buck has. The more I read the more I want to head out to the local shop to buy another. My next one will be an old classic for sure.

Thanks for taking the time to read and reply.

I'm using an Alpha Dorado w/154 as one of my EDC's so far just minor cutting chores.....tape ,boxes string, rope, finger (no blood) just skin. This hunting season it will get a good work out.... still scary sharp.

Well guys, just got back from the local True Value Hardware where I was able to pick up a new 110 Centennial for $50. So I guess it's official, 2 bucks in two days, I defineatly have the "bug" so to speak. What a nice looking knife this is. I am not sure if I should carry this one or tuck it away, I think it will be on the belt. I'm not exactly sure why but my other knives were never this fun to buy and stare at.

Later.

MacK,,,you might want to check in here before you grab one at some place like a True Value. Unless you know you are really getting a bargain on an old one.

yes, you now have bugs...

And yes, the alpha folder with rosewood, is ATS34 steel, and is model 277 if it doesnt have the gut hook.
Nice piece...really smooth

Yeah, I figured that.

The place is a 3 minute drive from the house with my alternative being driving in to Boston and dealing with that traffic nightmare. What is the average price of a 110 Centennial anyway?

DON"T ...... I REPEAT DON"T look on e- bay.... I say that everyday and still
pull the trigger..... besides the Buck Custom Shop and specials.....oh and Bass Pro, Cabela's,.... did I mention Bucks Custom Shop.... DON"T go there.

Smokey Mountain Knife works has good prices on Bucks also. They are online at eknifeworks.com

Hey BostonMack...

This is a great place to hangout. Welcome.

I lived in Boston for a year back in '85. Worked in Gov't Center and lived on Pinckney Street.

Hey Buckaholic,

I guess you know about the traffic then huh? I am in HVAC now but I worked right down the street from Gvt Center in Post Office Square and Coopers and Lybrand LLC for 7 years. Where do ya call home now?

This is a great forum. It seems like everyone is respectable and quick to help which is all one could ask for.

God Damn 334, your forsight may be right.

A few years ago I went headfirst into a firearm buying phase. It's about $13,000.00 later and I wouldnt change a thing. Keep in mind my marriage wasn't exactly smooth as ice at the time either but I can understand how bad an "addiction" can get. You have a beautiful collection there and I am sure that I will use it as inspiration moving forward.

Hey BostonMack...

Yeah, Boston traffic blows chunks big time. I was lucky I could walk to work.
Now I live about 40 miles from SF as the pink flamingo flies.

Check out this online store for good pricing and service...
