Hello everyone!

I wanted to take a moment and introduce myself. My name is Aaron and I live in Jailifornia (California to some) My recent purchase has been a SOG Flash 2 with a straight blade and Zytel handle. I'm still trying to figure of I will be happy with the AUS 8 blade in the long run. I am still trying to learn about quality metals (mostly from this site) I going through sort of a test period for this knife, being that I have heard mix reviews. I have 30 days to return it for something else or refund if need by. The store that I purchased it from is a local 'chain' store so the price was a bit higher than what I have seen. One other knife I was looking at is the Kershaw Leek (which they stock) so I didn't mind buying this knife at the time. Thanks for all the information on the forums!

Aaron.

Welcome to BF Aaron. I have both the Flash I and II. Both of mine came hair shaving sharp out of the box and the edge on both are still holding. Another one you may want to look into is the Vulcan or Mini Vulcan. VG-10 blade, zytel handle, the regular comes with a 3.5" blade and the Mini comes with a 3" blade. Pic of my Mini.

Welcome to the forums!

My first real knife purchase was an AUS-8a Ka-Bar Mule Folder. It's a decent steel when treated properly, but some would consider it at the lower end of quality steels. You've probably already seen it, but, if you haven't, here's a link to a list of steels and information on each one: http://www.zknives.com/knives/articles/knifesteelfaq.shtml

For the most part, I'm a fan of SOG knives, and a lot of the guys here like Kershaws... either way you go, it's not a bad choice - so, just go with the one that call's your name. :) Again, glad to have you join us.

Thanks for the replies!

I know this will become an addiction to me, in the future I would like to get a Leek (first knife that started getting me interested) A SOG Trident and a BM Nitrous Stryker.

Welcome aboard!

I just got a Flash II last week. So far I'm liking it. It's incredibly light for the size and sits very deep in the pocket. My first SOG.

This is a great forum. Since I joined a few months ago I've learned a great deal and fueled my knife addiction enough to buy five new folders; another on the way.

Did your blade have some side to side play in it? Ive heard that it can mostly be taken out with some adjusting. Also my safety wont open in one motion unless I use my fingernail. If I try to unlock it with say the meat of my finger it wont fully unlock, stops in the middle then I have to use a fingernail.

I have an aluminum Flash II and it did have a slight amount of side to side play.

The trick is to adjust the pivot without making it too tight, but I did get most of the play out.

Hi Aaron and welcome to the forum.
I have the BM Nitrous Stryker 913 D2 Blade. It is my second favourite behind BM HK 14205 Palin Edge Satin Blade finish.
You could not go wrong with these two - they will last you a lifetime, even with heavy duty abuse.
The only letdown with the Leek is the plastic locking mechanism at the base of the blade. Kersaw bang out an all metal knife with the Leek and then let themselves down by skimping on plastic on something that is important in locking the blade! Go figure!

Welcome to BladeForums! :)

My girlfriend gifted me a SOG Flash I on our one-year anniversary, and I have been very happy with it ever since!

Once the knife bug has really gotten you, I'd like to suggest something from Benchmade or Spyderco---perhaps a Benchmade Griptilian and a Spyderco Delica, Endura, Military, or Native. All are excellent EDC standards in the realm of production knives!

Good luck in your journey through the wonderful world of cutlery.

Evey though part of my EDC line up are an SNG and an XM-18 my Sog Flash II still gets plenty of pocket time. It is one hell of a knife and holds an edge better than some other more $$$ blades. Plus I have a thing for Zytel and G10...

Hi Aaron,

I've been lurking for for a few months now, been a knife nut for years though. The knife purchasing "madness" has just begun my friend! You start with justifying a $50 plus knife then it goes to justifying a $100 knife and well, you'll see. On the Benchmade stryker, I've purchased 2 of them, both mini's with the tanto part serrated blades. These are my favorite knives by far. A benchmade Griptilian is another knife I have and also like. You've got to try a Grip they are great knives!

Oh, and the more you learn here the more you will be trying to justify a sebbie! (My wife would kill me)

A little play, but nothing that concerns me. Also, the safety on mine is easy to open or lock with the fingertip.

You know what's funny, that was the first knife I bought when I got back into knives. Still have it...
And it led down a dark path...
Stash your money while you can!

One more question.

Do you think this knife would be a police problem? I don't do any thing stupid and don't plan on it. I wanted ta knife that I could use every day but be a 'cool' knife at the same time. After reading a few things I'm not sure, I really don't need any overnights or felonies on my record haha. Say getting a traffic stop and the officer asking or pointing it out.

Welcome Aaron,
This is a fine place to hang out.

Your question would be best asked in the Knife Laws forum.

That said, as a person who has been around for awhile, I have found that the two most important virtues when dealing with the police, are truth and respect. If you are carrying a knife, tell them about it. If they ask you why you carry, it is a tool that you use for daily tasks such as slicing food, breaking down boxes, etc. Again, the best policy is honesty and respect.
